NEW YORK - The Nationals need to find a way to bounce back quickly from Friday's difficult loss and get back in their series with the scorching Mets.
Washington led 6-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth. But the Mets exploded for six hits against Nats closer Sean Doolittle, including a three-run homer by Todd Frazier to tie the game and a walk-off single to right field by Michael Conforto to pull off the 7-6 comeback. The Mets have won seven games in a row.
But the Nats skipper was ready to move on after the shocker.
"We still got a lot of baseball," said Nationals manager Davey Martinez. "It's one game. We got to come back tomorrow. Win tomorrow and then we come back the next day and win the series. Let's focus on tomorrow. Go 1-0 tomorrow and worry about the game tomorrow."
Left-hander Patrick Corbin is charged with that responsibility.
Corbin is 9-5 with a 3.43 ERA in 23 starts for the Nats, with 164 strikeouts in 141 2/3 innings. He is 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA in four starts against the Mets this season, with 31 strikeouts in 25 innings, five homers and seven walks allowed. Corbin allowed five runs Aug. 4 in a no-decision at Arizona but has not lost a game since June 11 in Chicago against the White Sox.
"The way he goes about his business, his competitiveness, he's an unbelievable athlete," Martinez said. "He prepares himself really well and is ready to pitch every five days, very consistent. He's been that way all year."
Starting pitching has fueled the recent surges of both the Nats and the Mets. The Nats' big three of Corbin, Stephen Strasburg and Max Scherzer have been elite, although Scherzer is on the shelf with injury. He's expected to conduct a bullpen session today. Martinez appreciates having elite starting pitching, the cornerstone for the Nats' success.
"It gives us an opportunity to win on a daily basis," Martinez said. "That's huge. You add those guys, and then those guys teaching the younger guys, the (Erick) Feddes and the (Joe) Rosses, who actually have done well the last couple of outings. That's huge for us and helps. So, the ability to come out and have good starting pitching and know that you have a chance to win that day, it's very important."
The Mets counter Corbin tonight with one of their top pitchers in right-hander Noah Syndergaard (8-5, 3.96 ERA).
The Nats' Trea Turner and Juan Soto extended their on-base streaks Friday night. Turner smacked two singles and earned two walks. Soto crushed a single, double and home run with two RBIs. Turner has reached base safely in 17 straight games, and Soto has pulled off the feat in 15 straight games. During the streaks, Turner is hitting .343 and Soto has three doubles, five homers and 12 RBIs, with 14 walks.
