Though their hopes of a fifth division title in eight years have all but been quashed, the Nationals still need to win as many games as they can as they attempt to lock up at least a wild card berth and preferably home field advantage for that winner-take-all game. Which means they need to win some games against the Braves.
That's not something they've done much during the second half of this season. They're 4-8 versus Atlanta since the All-Star break, 7-10 overall for the season, with two head-to-head games left this weekend. A couple of wins to close out this series would at least salvage things a bit and help reduce the magic number for a wild card berth (it's currently 13).
The Nationals are using a little-seen battery this afternoon. Austin Voth is on the mound to make his sixth start of the season, the eighth of his career. Behind the plate will be Raudy Read, who makes on his second career big league start.
With Kurt Suzuki still sidelined with an elbow injury and Yan Gomes having started seven games in a row, the Nats have little choice but to play one of the two rookie backup catchers now on the roster. They went with Read over Tres Barrera, in large part because he caught Voth at Triple-A Fresno much of this season. They'll hope the familiarity helps.
