On Thursday, the Nationals will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day during an afternoon game against the Rockies. The team will be raising awareness about environmental issues and highlighting the green features at Nationals Park, America's first green ballpark.
Earth Day National Coordinator Denis Hayes and Athletes for Earth Ambassador/ Nordic Combined Olympic Gold Medalist Billy Demong will participate in pre-game activities to commemorate the anniversary.
Earth Day will also kick off the new "Green Tour" at Nationals Park. The tour will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the various environmentally-friendly design elements incorporated into the ballpark's construction. Nationals Park was the nation's first major professional sports venue to become LEED Silver Certified by the U.S. Green Building Council.
During the game, the Earth Day Network will be on hand encouraging fans to take part in a Carbon Footprint Quiz while distributing information on lessening their impact on the environment.
You can celebrate Earth Day by taking public transportation to the game. All fans who present their Metro farecard or SmarTrip card at the Nationals Park Box Offices will receive $3 off any ticket priced at $10 or more.
Recycling is another great way to honor Earth Day. Fans who bring a recyclable container (plastic, glass, aluminum) will receive a ticket voucher courtesy of Coca-Cola for 50% off select tickets for today's game or any Monday through Thursday home game in May or June.
