In the heat of the night (updated)

Tonight's first-pitch temperature was 104 degrees. That's the second-highest temp here in the last 15 years. It was 105 degrees for a July 6, 1999 game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Alfredo Simon has shut out the Angels on two hits over the first three innings. He escaped a two-on, two-out jam in the third by striking out Bobby Abreu on an 89 mph slider. Simon threw 21 pitches through two innings, 20 in the third. He's allowed two runs and five hits over 10 innings in his two starts since returning to the rotation. Luke Scott reached on an error by Angels second baseman Maicer Izturis in the second inning. Izturis is playing second base and batting leadoff, just as brother Cesar did today in the Gulf Coast League. Down on the farm, Mitch Atkins gave up hits to the first two Gwinnett batters he faced tonight, and Triple-A Norfolk fell behind, 1-0, in the first inning. Ryan Adams is playing second base. Josh Bell is serving as the designated hitter, with Brendan Harris starting at third. Rough first inning for Single-A Delmarva left-hander Jarret Martin. He allowed five runs (four earned) and two hits, walked three batters, committed a balk and hit a batter. The Shorebirds' 2-0 lead didn't stand a chance. Update: The Angels loaded the bases with one out in the fourth on two singles and Simon's error, but Mike Trout popped up and Jeff Mathis grounded to first. Single-A Frederick shortstop Manny Machado has an RBI triple tonight.

Waiting on the first hit (and there it is)
The starters look to start pitching better
