Jair Jurrjens on today's roster move; Eddie Gamboa no-hitter notes and quotes

It was a new one for me today when Jair Jurrjens was designated for assignment off the 25-man roster. There is a difference between DFA and this designation of DFA "off the roster." To cut to the chase, it appears that Jurrjens, after a 48-hour window, is very likely to remain in the organization, and will likely head back to pitch for Triple-A Norfolk. "They needed to put B-Rob on the roster, and I was the guy that came out from the bullpen yesterday. I'm the guy out," Jurrjens said today. He pitched 2 1/3 shutout innings of relief last night against the Yankees. "To come in for the first time out the bullpen yesterday with the bases loaded and get out of it with no runs scored and give the team two solid innings, I did my job," he said. "Now keep working and keep getting better. I'll roll with the punches, this is part of the job. Be ready for the next chance." He said he'd like to remain with the organization. "Yeah, I like this team, but if another team wants my service, I'd be happy to go to another team," he said. "But right now, just keep working. I may take some time off and do what I need to do." By now you have probably heard that Double-A Bowie right-hander Eddie Gamboa pitched a seven-inning no-hitter today as the Baysox beat Harrisburg 7-0 in Game 1 of a doubleheader, with Game 2 rained out. Gamboa threw 103 pitches, 58 for strikes, in pitching the ninth no-hitter in team history. Doubleheaders are scheduled for seven innings in the minors, thus the seven-inning no-hitter. It was the first Baysox no-hitter since Radhames Liz threw one over nine innings June 1, 2007, also against Harrisburg. "It's good for the team," Gamboa said. "We needed something like that to get us going. It was a seven-inning game so it's not an official, legit (no-hitter) but we will take it. It's fun to be a part of. "I just thought, 'Why not?' It's hard enough getting a no-hitter as it is, so for it to pour and not have a grip, it really couldn't have been tougher. The crazy thing about the last inning is it's the only inning I've gone where I only threw knuckles. If I was gonna give it up, it was going to be sticking with the knuckleball." The Orioles are converting Gamboa to a knuckleball pitcher, and the conversion seems to be working although he doesn't exclusively throw the knuckler and still uses his other pitches. But in three of his last four starts, Gamboa has pitched at least seven innings without allowing a run. In his last start, he took a no-hitter into the seventh inning. In those last two starts combined, Gamboa has thrown 14 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit with six walks and 12 strikeouts. Opponent batters are just 1-for-43 against him in those two games. He is 4-5 with a 3.48 ERA in 15 Baysox starts on the year, and has pitched to an ERA of 2.10 ERA in five June starts. With the rainout today in Game 2 of the twinbill, Bowie's starting rotation is being pushed back a day, meaning Eduardo Rodriguez's Double-A debut will not be tomorrow but on Tuesday night at Prince George's Stadium. Mike Wright gets the start Monday night for the Baysox.
