J.J. Hardy and Dariel Alvarez added to roster

NEW YORK - The Orioles made their two anticipated roster moves this afternoon, reinstating shortstop J.J. Hardy from the 15-day disabled list and recalling outfielder Dariel Alvarez from Single-A Frederick.

Hardy, 33, was placed on the disabled list Aug. 24 with a strained left groin. He's appeared in 93 games this season, making 91 starts at shortstop, and has compiled a .992 fielding percentage while committing only three errors.

Alvarez, 26, made his major league debut on Aug. 28 in Texas. He's batting .250/.308/.333 (3-for-12) with a double and run scored in four games with the Orioles this season. He's also thrown out a runner at the plate from right field.

In 135 games this season between Triple-A Norfolk (130 games) and Frederick (five games), Alvarez has batted .277/.309/.426 (146-for-528) with 25 doubles, three triples, 16 home runs and 73 RBIs.

Alvarez was optioned to Frederick because the Keys didn't qualify for the playoffs and the Orioles could recall him as soon as their season ended.

Earlier today, the Orioles announced that they will host the Red Land Little League team from Lewisberry, Pa., before Saturday afternoon's game against the Royals at Camden Yards.

Representing the Mid-Atlantic Region in the Little League World Series, Red Land defeated the Southwest Region to win the U.S. title game on Aug. 29 in Williamsport, Pa. The team went 4-1 in the tournament, losing only to Japan in the World Series Championship game on Aug. 30.

During a special pregame ceremony, the Red Land team will be introduced to the fans in attendance and a video will showcase highlights from their U.S. Championship victory.

The Orioles have offered their support of the Red Land team in various ways, including the phone call made by manager Buck Showalter and third baseman Manny Machado.
