Jones error allows three runs to score (NY turns triple play, O's lose 5-2)

NEW YORK - Adam Jones reached up to catch Vernon Wells' fly ball to the warning track in center field with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh. It landed in his glove - and popped out of it. All three Yankees runners scored, and we're no longer tied. Yankees 5, Orioles 2. The runs are unearned, and the Yankees collected all of them without a hit. A leadoff walk to Francisco Cervelli in the seventh ended Miguel Gonzalez's night. Left-hander Troy Patton retired the next two batters, walked Kevin Youkilis intentionally and hit Travis Hafner, who managed to avoid the disabled list while trotting to first base. Pedro Strop entered with the sacks full and induced the fly ball from Wells. Yes, Jones started to blow a bubble as he reached up for the ball. He also does it when he makes a great catch. It had nothing to do with the drop. Tough night for Jones, who also has hit into two double plays. Gonzalez is charged with two earned runs (three total) and five hits in six-plus innings, with five walks that tied his career high, four strikeouts and a hit batter. He threw 102 pitches, 61 for strikes. Gonzalez didn't have much tonight except grit. He lost the feeling in his extremities during the anthem. Gonzalez was working on seven days rest. He hadn't pitched since the third game at Tropicana Field. The Orioles tied the game in the top of the seventh inning when Matt Wieters reached on Youkilis' fielding error at third base, took second on a balk and scored on J.J. Hardy's groundball single up the middle. Sabathia and Yankees manager Joe Girardi argued the balk call, which proved costly. Both teams have combined for one extra-base hit, by Alexi Casilla, who doubled in the third inning. Casilla led off the top of the eighth with an infield hit and Nick Markakis followed with a single. Manny Machado is stepping to the plate as the potential tying run with no outs. Update: Well, I didn't expect that to happen. Machado hit into a triple play, the second turned by the Yankees since 1969. Score it 4-6-5-6-5-3-4. Unreal. Shortstop Jayson Nix decided to go for the out at third base after taking Robinson Cano's throw at second for the force. Casilla was tagged out in the rundown, and Machado was out trying to advance to second base. Not sure why Nix went to third, but it worked. The Yankees also turned a triple play on April 22, 2010 at Oakland. The Orioles hit into their last triple play on April 3, 1996 against the Royals, with Bobby Bonilla at the plate. Update II: Chris Davis singled again with two outs in the top of the ninth, but J.J. Hardy flied out against Mariano Rivera, and the Orioles lost to the Yankees, 5-2. The Orioles are back at .500. Tommy Hunter allowed one hit and struck out a batter in a scoreless eighth.
