Kansas City comeback: Down to last out, O's rally to beat Royals

Entering tonight's game, the Orioles were 10-1 when Adam Jones hit a home run this season. Make that now 11-1. And it only took 15 innings. The Orioles have produced some impressive comeback wins and they can now add tonight's in Kansas City to the list. Jones hit a long homer to left off Nate Adcock in the top of the 15th to give the Orioles a 4-3 win over the Royals. Jones was 0-for-6 on the night when he came to bat in the 15th. But he crushed a 2-2 pitch for his 12th homer of the season. Jones now has six homers and 12 RBIs over his last 12 games. The Orioles didn't score until the eighth inning and they trailed 3-1 heading to the top of the ninth, but scored two off Royals closer Jonathan Broxton to tie the game on a Wilson Betemit solo homer and a J.J. Hardy RBI single. Hardy's hit came with the O's down to their last out. As the Orioles have proven several times this year, you have to get all 27 outs against them and some of the last ones have been tough to get. It was a night where Tommy Hunter pitched well but got a no decision, despite giving up just two runs on seven hits over seven innings. This was Hunter's fourth quality start in eight outings and the sixth time he pitched six innings or more. The Orioles have back-to-back quality starts for the first time since May 1-2. Jim Johnson got the final three outs for his 13th save in 13 chances and 21st straight dating to last August. Before he came in, Dana Eveland pitched three shutout innings and Kevin Gregg added two more to get the victory. Here is an impressive stat: Last year, the Orioles were 2-85 when trailing after eight innings. This year, they are now 3-12 when behind heading into the ninth. Beginning play today, six AL clubs didn't have even one win when behind after eight and 10 AL clubs had one or fewer of those wins. The Orioles have also now won five straight extra-inning games and have outscored their opponents 13-3 on the year in extra frames. Those last two games have gone a combined 32 innings. The Orioles improved to 24-14 to stay tied for first with Tampa Bay, which also won tonight. The Orioles are now 12-5 on the road and 16-7 over their last 23 games. It was another night that the Orioles were down, but not out and they won again to move 10 games over the .500 mark.
