Machado injures right knee (Machado sprains knee, O's win 11-3)

Orioles third baseman Manny Machado left tonight's game in the bottom of the third inning with an injury to his right knee. Head athletic trainer Richie Bancells and manager Buck Showalter helped Machado off the field. I'll pass along an update as it becomes available. Machado shattered his bat while swinging at a pitch from Yankees starter Chris Capuano. His right knee appeared to buckle, causing Machado to fall on his back. Machado grabbed the knee and was in obvious pain as Bancells and Showalter rushed out of the dugout. He eventually sat up and was taking deep breaths. Machado-holding-knee-screen.jpgBack in October, Machado underwent surgery on his left knee to repair a torn medial patellofemoral ligament. He missed the first month of the season. Shortstop J.J. Hardy isn't in tonight's lineup due to a sprained left thumb. Showalter has Chris Davis available to play third base while Ryan Flaherty remains at shortstop. Machado doubled in his first at-bat after going 7-for-14 with a home run and four RBIs in the three-game series against the Cardinals. He began the night batting .277/.323/.428 with 13 doubles, 12 homers and 32 RBIs in 81 games. Adam Jones singled with two outs in the third to score Jonathan Schoop and reduce the Yankees' lead to 3-2, but Machado's injury has become the primary focus at Camden Yards. Update: The Orioles announced that Machado suffered a sprained right knee and will be re-evalulated on Tuesday. Machado's replacement is doing just fine. Davis hit a long two-run homer off Capuano in the fifth, his 21st this season, to give the Orioles a 4-3 lead. He crushed an 81 mph slider. Update II: Adam Jones had an RBI double off reliever Adam Warren in the seventh and Nelson Cruz followed with a long two-run homer to increase the Orioles' lead to 7-3. Cruz has 31 homers and 83 RBIs on the season. He's knocked in three runs tonight. Darren O'Day retired the Yankees in order in the seventh and he's back out for the eighth. Update III: Game over. The Orioles rally after Machado's injury to defeat the Yankees 11-3 before 34,018 at Camden Yards. Jonathan Schoop hit a three-run homer off Chase Whitely in the eighth. The Orioles totaled three homers tonight to give them 150 on the season. Schoop has 10 of them, including his first this year at Camden Yards. Davis singled, Jones doubled off the left field fence and David Lough reached on an infield hit to score another run. The Orioles have scored in double digits in three of the last four games. They still haven't lost consecutive games since June 28-29 against the Rays. The Yankees fall seven games behind the Orioles in the American League East. The Blue Jays are 5 1/2 back as they play in Seattle. The Orioles are 68-50 overall and 33-26 at home. They're 29-19 vs. the division.
