In the third inning, Manny Machado left the game injured. In the fifth inning, the player that replaced him hit a go-ahead homer. The Orioles were far from done on offense at that point.
So it wasn't all bad tonight for the Orioles.
Chris Davis entered for Machado and hit a two-run shot off New York's Chris Capuano in the fifth as the O's moved ahead by one run. They added to that lead with three in the seventh for a four-run edge and turned it into a rout with four in the eighth for an 11-3 blowout of the Yankees in the opener of a three-game series.
The Orioles improved to 68-50 and won their eighth consecutive series opener. The Yankees fall to seven games out of first place with the loss.
Machado swung at a pitch in the third and hit a broken-bat groundout to short. He went down hard after the swing, clutching his knee. He left the game with a sprained right knee and will be re-evaluated tomorrow. It was his left knee that was surgically repaired in October.
The Orioles allowed two runs to score in the Yankees second on a double steal and botched rundown that resulted in two errors and two runs.
But the Orioles battled back. After a Nelson Cruz sac fly had plated a run in the first, they pulled within 3-2 in the third on Adam Jones' RBI single.
They took the lead on Davis' two-run shot. It was his 21st of the year and fourth in the last seven games. Since joining the Orioles in 2011, Davis has hit five go-ahead homers against New York. Only Mike Napoli, with six, has more.
The Davis homer made Bud Norris a winner even though he only went five innings. He gave up five hits and three runs and is 10-7 with an ERA of 3.75.
They moved to put the game away with three in the seventh on Jones' RBI double and a Cruz two-run homer. He hit No. 31 off Adam Warren on a 3-2 pitch.
Jonathan Schoop hit a three-run shot in the eighth for a 10-3 margin. It was his 10th of the year and first at Camden Yards. Schoop is the Orioles RBI leader this season against New York. He is now 10-for-26 (.385) with three homers and 10 RBIs.
The Orioles lead the majors with 44 multi-homer games and are 34-10 when they hit two or more. The O's have scored 10 or more in three of the last four games, hitting 12 home runs.
The Orioles improved to 7-3 against the Yankees and to 29-19 in AL East games. They have the best in-division record in the American League. The Orioles have won 14 of 19 home games and are 42-23 since May 31.
In the second game of this series on Tuesday night, Wei-Yin Chen (12-4, 3.90 ERA) faces Shane Greene (3-1, 2.89 ERA).
