Orioles third baseman Manny Machado did more than torture opposing pitchers since breaking camp. He won an award for it.
Machado has been named the American League's Player of the Month for April after batting .344/.394/.667 with 10 doubles, seven home runs, 16 RBIs, seven walks and 20 runs scored. He committed only one error, on an errant throw during Saturday night's game against the White Sox.
Machado also led the league with 33 hits.
Moving into a new month didn't cool him off. Machado recorded his fourth consecutive multi-hit game yesterday and his 12th of the season.
Playing both third base and shortstop, Machado went 8-for-17 in the four-game series against the White Sox at Camden Yards. He had two doubles, a home runs, five RBIs, two walks and four runs scored.
The honors keep pouring in for the Orioles. Outfielder Mark Trumbo received his watch over the weekend for being named the AL's co-Player of the Week.
Chris Davis won the AL Player of the Month award in April 2013. Melvin Mora won it in May 2004 and August 2008. Brian Roberts won it in April 2005. Albert Belle won it in September 1999 and June 2000. Rafael Palmeiro won it in June 1998.
