Manny Machado talks about his right knee injury (plus Davis and Norris quotes)

Leaving the game with a right knee sprain after falling to the ground in a third-inning groundout tonight, Manny Machado said he doesn't yet know how long he will be out or the severity of his injury. "We don't know. X-rays came out negative. The MRI tomorrow will tell us what is going on. How long or how many days I'm going to be out. We'll know more tomorrow," he said after the game in the Orioles clubhouse. Is Machado optimistic about tomorrow? "I have no idea. Doesn't feel too bad, but we'll see. You can't really say something now because you don't know what is going on in there. Whatever comes out of my mouth, might be a liar, might not. Just wait for the results. Just a little sore now, sore feeling. Keep icing it and hopefully it's nothing too bad." Manny-Machado-holds-knee.jpg Did the doctors seem upbeat after their initial look at the knee? "I guess," he said. "Took an X-ray and it looked good, but we'll see. Nothing bad. MRI is going to show what's really wrong with it, so we'll see." Machado had crutches next to his locker although he walked to the locker without them. "Just precaution. I hate crutches," he said. "I thought I put those down a long time ago. I don't want to use them but will just to stay off my feet and see where this goes." Machado had his left knee surgically repaired in October. He said he could not completely explain what happened and why his knee gave way as he went to the ground. "I have no idea. No explanation for it. Just a freak accident," he said. "Whenever you go down, it's something you don't want to be in that position. First thing that comes to your mind is bad thoughts. "But you know what, it's part of the game. Things you can't control. We're looking at the bright side of it and trying to stay on the bright side." I asked Chris Davis about the possibility of the team having to play for some period of time without Machado? "We are not thinking about that right now," Davis said. "Hopefully it's not too serious. Lot of unknowns right now. "If we have to move forward without him it's something we are going to have to do. Had to do it in 2012 without Nicky (Markakis) and obviously last year without him. Kind of been doing it all year without (Matt) Wieters. You play the hand you get dealt and you make the best of it." Davis talked about the Orioles' power surge that has produced 36 runs and 12 homers the past four games. "We've been swinging the bats well lately with the exception of yesterday. We've had some good at-bats, guys are driving the ball. Been fortunate to win some games by a pretty good margin." Bud Norris went just five innings tonight, allowing five hits and three runs, but he picked up his 10th win. "The bullpen picked me up and these guys swinging the bats and scoring 11 is pretty fun to watch even after five. Glad I got through five and I'll get the win but this is a team effort and the 25-man roster did it tonight." Norris was asked about Machado. "It was a scare for all us. We didn't like seeing it in Tampa last year and obviously that was pretty frightening here today. We want him out there with us but when he is 100 percent and can play the caliber of baseball he can play." With this win the Orioles move seven games ahead of third-place New York. "We are definitely not taking it for granted," Norris said. "We understand that we have to take this one game at a time. We come to the park every day with the same attitude to play hard and leave it on the field. It's impressive where we're at right now but we want to keep going and keep fighting hard." Norris has won his last six starts against the AL East. In nine starts against the East, he is 6-1 with a 2.62 ERA. This was just the Orioles' second win in franchise history over the Yankees at home when making three or more errors. The other win came on Sept. 21, 1961 when they made four errors. The Orioles have the best major league record in night games at 51-28 (.646). They are 14-5 at home since June 30.
