Markakis takes errorless streak to Anaheim (Jones homers, game tied)

The Orioles lead the all-time series against the Angels, 345-290, going 184-129 in Baltimore and 161-161 in Anaheim. Does anyone remember when Nolan Ryan no-hit the Orioles, back when he pitched for the California Angels? I'm old enough to recall it vividly. It happened on June 1, 1975. Ryan walked four and struck out nine while tossing the fourth no-no of his career. Wayne Garland replaced starter Ross Grimsley and allowed one hit over 4 2/3 innings in a 1-0 loss. Check out the boxscore here. Tom Shopay made a rare start. Brooks Robinson's career was winding down. According to the Orioles, Nick Markakis has played 271 consecutive games in the outfield without committing an error, his last miscue occurring on Aug. 10, 2012. His stretch of 271 games without an error is the longest by an Orioles' outfielder in franchise history, surpassing B.J. Surhoff's 234 games in 1998-2000. Markakis' streak is the longest active in the majors. The American League record for consecutive games without committing an error by an outfielder is 336 by Rich Amaral (1995-2000). The all-time record for an outfielder is 392 by Darren Lewis (1990-1994). Delmon Young singled yesterday as a pinch-hitter for Markakis. He's batting .500/.529/.750 (8-for-16) with a double, home run and three RBIs off the bench. Orioles' pinch-hitters rank second in the majors with a .359 average, trailing only the White Sox (.372). Wei-Yin Chen (29) and MASN analyst Mike Bordick (49) are both celebrating their birthday today. Not together, but ... Update: Adam Jones hit a two-run homer in the top of the first inning, but Josh Hamilton cut the lead in half with a RBI single in the bottom half. Jones' 18th homer of the season came after Nick Markakis led off with a single. That's two first-inning homers for Jones in the last three games. Bud Norris stayed in the game in the bottom of the second after being hit on the right foot or ankle by Hank Conger's shot up the middle. The Blue Jays and Yankees lost tonight, so the Orioles could increase their lead to four games in the American League East. Update II: Conger singled to score Howie Kendrick in the fourth and tie the game 2-2. Norris struck out Mike Trout with the bases loaded to end the inning. Angels starter Matt Shoemaker has retired 14 in a row since Jones' home run.
