SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles plan on making their next round of cuts before today's game against the Red Sox. They have 44 players in camp, including eight non-roster invitees.
Matt Wieters will catch in an intrasquad game Sunday at Twin Lakes Park. He hasn't been behind the plate since March 12 due to right elbow soreness.
Wieters threw to the bases this morning on the Earl Weaver "Little" Field, with bench coach John Russell and head athletic trainer Richie Bancells paying close attention. Caleb Joseph covered the bags for him.
Manager Buck Showalter didn't dismiss the idea that Kevin Gausman could take the mound for the sixth game of the season when the Orioles need a fifth starter.
"It's still a possibility," he said. "We'll see how Sunday or Monday goes."
Gausman will throw on one of those days.
Showalter said he probably won't use infielder Steve Tolleson, who's still sore after yesterday's collision with catcher Francisco Pena along the third base line.
"It's almost like whiplash," Showalter said. "He took a pretty good pop there. Knocked the breath out of him."
Available relievers today include Vance Worley, T.J. McFarland and Mychal Givens.
Ubaldo Jimenez is starting Sunday night against the Pirates in Bradenton. The hosts are sending Juan Nicasio to the mound.
Jimenez's last two outings have come at Twin Lakes Park. He's allowed one run in 10 2/3 innings.
"I've watched him, and we've got people who are watching," Showalter said. "He's pitched well in the A games, too. Ubaldo's had a good spring. He kind of picked up where he left off last year, knock on wood."
In his last two Grapefruit League starts, both against the Twins, Jimenez has allowed one run and five hits in 6 1/3 innings. The Braves roughed him up for six runs, with three walks, in one-third of an inning in his debut.
The Orioles will take batting practice in Sarasota before making the short drive to McKechnie Field.
Mike Wright starts Monday against the Red Sox's Rick Porcello in Fort Myers. Miguel Gonzalez starts Tuesday night versus the Braves in Sarasota.
Showalter watched David Murphy walk down the first base line with Chris Davis and wondered aloud about the Red Sox's plans for the veteran outfielder, who has an opt-out clause in his contract..
Showalter was asked whether he remembers a spring like this one when he's been mostly set at each position.
"Yes," he replied. "A couple times. Probably not with the Orioles. The first year we were set, but we didn't like what we were set with."
Laughter ensued.
Today's PA announcer is 14-year-old Jack Collins of Joppa, who won the item in the "Stand Up to Cancer" auction at the Winter Meetings.
At least he won't have to pronounce "Odrisamer Despaigne."
