Trumbo shines, Gallardo struggles in early innings (we're tied)

SARASOTA, Fla. - You want the good news first or the bad news?

Mark Trumbo continues to swing a hot bat, producing a two-run double in the first inning that raised his average to .327 and his RBI total to 15.

Trumbo, who also has five home runs this spring, scored on Pedro Alvarez's single into right-center field.

Trumbo-orange-at-bat-spring-sidebar.jpgThe at-bat was impressive. Trumbo fought off a couple of inside pitches, fouling them off, before going to right-center off Red Sox starter Justin Haley.

A 3-0 Orioles lead dissolved with Yovani Gallardo on the mound in the second inning. The right-hander gave up five runs and four hits and also walked two batters. He was aided by a double play after pitching coach Dave Wallace made a visit.

Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a two-run homer to the opposite field on a 3-0 pitch to complete the scoring and raise his average to .382. He's also singled today.

Allen Craig led off the second with a walk, Sandy Leon singled and Rafael Devers singled to load the bases. Mauricio Dubon followed with a two-run single before the double play.

Mookie Betts delivered an RBI single to tie the game and Bradley easily cleared the fence in right field.

Gallardo is up to 43 pitches in two innings, only 19 for strikes. His fastball mostly is sitting in the upper 80s.

Gallardo's ERA has risen to 18.47 in 6 1/3 innings in the Grapefruit League.

Rule 5 pick Joey Rickard has been hit by a pitch and walked in two innings. Rickard and Manny Machado, who singled in the first, executed a double steal before Trumbo's double.

Caleb Joseph and Adam Jones singled in the second, as the Orioles loaded the bases with one out. Machado struck out looking and Chris Davis struck out swinging to end the threat.

Update: Gallardo allowed another run in the third on a walk, single and Leon's sacrifice fly. He's surrendered six runs and six hits in three innings, with three walks, two strikeouts and a home run.

Gallardo has thrown 63 pitches, 30 for strikes. The stadium radar gun has him topping out at 88 mph.

Update II: Gallardo was charged wtih seven runs and eight hits in 3 2/3 innings, with three walks and two strikeouts. He threw 78 pitches, 37 for strikes.

Vance Worley threw one pitch after replacing Gallardo and ended the fourth inning.

The Orioles tied the game in the bottom of the fourth against Carlos Marmol, who failed to record an out. Rickard walked again and scored on a wild pitch, and Adam Jones scored on Trumbo's ground ball.

Trumbo has three RBIs today and 16 this spring. He also stole a base in the fourth.
