Nationals honor Giolito, Souza and Difo (updated with Souza quotes, also Giolito interview note)

The Nationals have named outfielder Steven Souza Jr. their minor league Player of the Year and right-hander Lucas Giolito minor league Pitcher of the Year. The club also named infielder Wilmer Difo the recipient of the second annual Bob Boone Award. Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo, vice president of player personnel Bob Boone, assistant general manager/vice president of player development Doug Harris and director of player development Mark Scialabba made the announcement. Giolitothrowingwhitesidebar.jpgThe 25-year-old Souza hit 18 homers with 75 RBIs and for a .350 average with the Triple-A Syracuse Chiefs. He has now hit 56 homers combined the past three seasons in the minors. Souza has been called to the big leagues twice this season and is currently with the Nationals as they surge toward possible home-field advantage in the National League playoffs. "It's been a tremendous year, to cap it off with this reward," Souza said. "I'm just truly honored. Especially the guys that have won it in the past, countless names that have been proven big leaguers. It's cool to have my name up on the wall with them. It's exciting to be a part of this team as well." Souza talked about what improvements he has made at the dish each season to reach this point. He was also named the International League rookie of the year this season. "Every year it's kind of something new," Souza said. "I've had hitting coaches every single year installed something new whether it be the mental side of the game, early on it was mechanical stuff. But really just trying to get out of my own head and play the game. Trying to be as simple as possible and consistent as possible. That's been my focus, trying to get mechanics out of the way and just playing the game, focusing on the mental side." The 20-year-old Giolito went 10-2 with a 2.20 ERA in 20 starts for low Single-A Hagerstown, dominating South Atlantic League competition. The Nationals were careful with his innings, limiting him to 98 innings because of his recent recovery from Tommy John surgery. The Nationals' top prospect is currently pitching in the instructional league in Viera, Fla. Difo, a 22-year-old shortstop from the Dominican Republic, hit .315 in 136 games with the Suns. He connected on a stunning 31 doubles, seven triples and 14 homers while contributing 49 stolen bases and 90 RBIs. He is also in Viera playing for the Nationals' instructional league team. Souza, Giolito and Difo represent the top prospects at their respective positions in the Nationals organization and demonstrate the work the club's scouts and coaches have been able to accomplish, not only in finding players but also teaching them to improve their immense talent. All three should make big steps next season. Souza will contend for a roster spot with the Nationals while Giolito and Difo could head to high Single-A Potomac or beyond. Note: It looks like I will be able to interview Giolito prior to tomorrow's game so look for the finished product on Nats Xtra pregame show Thursday evening.
