Orioles bat around in fourth to take lead (O's win 9-5)

NEW YORK - Well, that escalated quickly. The Orioles sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the fourth inning and destroyed a 3-0 deficit, scoring six runs on seven hits and forcing Yankees manager Joe Girardi to go to his bullpen. Girardi may have reacted too late, considering how much he normally enjoys that little stroll to the mound. Shane Greene was charged with all six runs. His replacement, David Huff, gave up a single to Nelson Cruz before retiring Steve Clevenger. Cruz led off the fourth with a single and collected another one as the Orioles batted around in the inning. flaherty-swing-white-sidebar.jpgThe Orioles have 25 hits in the last 13 innings since being one-hit in the series opener. Clevenger singled and Kelly Johnson walked to load the bases with one out. Ryan Flaherty plated two runs with a double and Nick Markakis singled with two outs to give the Orioles a 4-3 lead. Markakis has five hits in the last two games. David Lough followed with an RBI triple, and he scored on Adam Jones' bunt single. Lough has five hits in his last nine at-bats, with a home run and three RBIs. He batted .333 in August and was hitting .333 this month before today. Greene had allowed two runs in 15 2/3 innings against the Orioles before the fourth inning. Update: Norris allowed three runs and five hits in six innings, with one walk, nine strikeouts and two home runs. He threw 95 pitches, 64 for strikes. Norris retired the last eight batters he faced. Tommy Hunter has replaced Norris in the bottom of the seventh. Steve Pearce is playing first base. Update II: The Orioles added three more runs in the eighth and lead 9-3. Cruz has four hits today and is batting .383 this month. Mark Teixeira just hit a two-run homer off Brad Brach with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, the ball slamming off the foul pole. The Orioles lead 9-5. Update III: It's finally over. The Orioles eliminate the Yankees from the wild card race with a 9-5 victory. Bud Norris is 15-8 with a 3.65 ERA this season, and 9-1 with a 2.91 ERA vs. the American League East. The Orioles are 95-63 overall, 45-32 on the road, 46-26 vs. the AL East and 13-5 against the Yankees.
