The Washington Nationals recalled right-handed pitcher Steven Fuentes and optioned right-handed pitcher Ryne Harper to the Alternate Training Site (Fredericksburg) on Tuesday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.
Fuentes, 23, joins the active roster for the first time in his career after taking part in his first Major League Spring Training in 2021. He spent the entire 2020 season at the Alternate Training Site (Fredericksburg) and was added to Washington's 40-man roster following the season.
In 2019, he started the season with Single-A Potomac, where he allowed just one earned run in 17.0 innings pitched (0.53 ERA). Fuentes was promoted to Double-A Harrisburg on May 8. He finished the 2019 campaign going 6-5 with a 2.23 ERA and one save in 23 games (11 starts) between Single-A Potomac and Double-A Harrisburg. He struck out 89 batters, walked 22 and surrendered just one home run across 80.2 innings pitched.
Harper, 32, appeared in two games out of the Nationals' bullpen, tossing 3.0 innings and pitching to a 3.00 ERA (1 ER/3.0 IP).
