FORT MYERS, Fla. - Jemile Weeks and David Lough opened the top of the first inning today with singles off Red Sox starter Allen Webster before Nick Markakis grounded into a 6-3 double play.
Chris Davis struck out to end the inning.
Davis provided the best quote of the day during batting practice, a smile spreading across his face as he delivered the line.
"Chris Davis isn't going to let success go to Chris Davis' head."
Manager Buck Showalter said the Orioles will make five or six cuts following the first split-squad game. He no longer expects to make any cuts after the 7:05 p.m. game in Port Charlotte.
The Orioles have 40 players in camp, including six non-roster invitees.
Dylan Bundy threw off a half mound for the first time this morning as part of his progression. Johan Santana will throw off a full mound on Thursday.
Mike Wright and Suk-Min Yoon will pitch for the Orioles in Saturday's exhibition game against Triple-A Norfolk at Harbor Park.
Update: Steve Clevenger belted his second home run of the spring to give the Orioles a 1-0 lead in the second.
Clevenger had three hits yesterday against the Twins and is 16-for-32 this spring.
Is that good?
Miguel Gonzalez gave up back-to-back singles in the bottom of the first, but Henry Urrutia threw out Grady Sizemore at second base and Mike Carp grounded into a double play. Eight of Gonzalez's 12 pitches were strikes.
