BOSTON – The Orioles are waiting until Tuesday morning to announce their starter for the series opener against the Mariners at Camden Yards. Kyle Bradish starts Wednesday, followed by Jordan Lyles on Thursday in his 300th career game.
A pitcher could come up from Triple-A Norfolk or manager Brandon Hyde goes with another bullpen game to piece together nine innings.
The Tides are off tonight and list DL Hall as Tuesday’s starter.
Grayson Rodriguez isn't going to be promoted to work on short rest.
Left-hander Zac Lowther would be on normal rest if the Orioles summoned him, he’s on the 40-man roster and he held Gwinnett to two runs over five innings in his last appearance. However, he’s sporting a 6.67 ERA and 1.652 WHIP in 10 games and is averaging almost four walks per nine innings.
Dean Kremer isn’t a consideration because he pitched yesterday, but he’s nearing a return to the Orioles.
Kremer is recovered from his oblique injury and has thrown nine scoreless innings with two hits, two walks and 18 strikeouts in three rehab games. He is stretched out to four innings.
“I think he’d be an option down the road,” Hyde said. “We need starter options and so with Dean, good to see him throw the ball well yesterday. He threw four innings in a Norfolk game. Just trying to build him up and possibly see him sometime soon.”
The Orioles could give Kremer starts to provide a little extra rest for other pitchers while staying with a five-man rotation. He’d also be an option as a bulk reliever if the need arises.
Hyde would like to get to the point where he has a set five, but it may not be a realistic goal.
“I think this year more than any other probably, and last year, too, it’s kind of the way it is with pitching right now,” he said. “Might see that throughout the season. We’ll see. But hopefully, these guys can make their start every fifth day.
“I’d love to give these guys a break, too, without off-days and the doubleheader, things like that, and four months to go. You want to try to keep these guys as healthy as possible for six months.”
Cody Sedlock was the eighth Oriole on Sunday to make his major league debut this season, and the sixth pitcher.
The Orioles have gone 26-12 in 38 five-game series since 1954, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. They’re 5-2 in rubber games this season.
