Notes on Machado, Tillman, Scott and Murphy

SARASOTA, Fla. - Orioles third baseman Manny Machado arrived in the clubhouse at 9:15 a.m. this morning and currently is having his right knee checked. He's expected to meet with the media - it's a small contingent - before leaving the Ed Smith Stadium complex.

Reliever Tommy Hunter called out Machado's name, walked across the room and gave him a big hug. Machado later made his way down the rows of lockers to embrace teammates, including Dylan Bundy, Parker Bridwell and Ryan Webb.

Webb and Machado congratulated each other on their marriages.

Chris Tillman, in his first year of arbitration eligibility, said he's open to signing an extension with the Orioles. There's mutual interest.

Tillman has told his agent, Danny Horwits of Beverly Hills Sports Council, to let him know if talks heat up. He isn't looking for incremental updates.

"I've heard rumors, I've heard people talking about it," Tillman said. "I do my job on the field and I'll let my agent do his job. When he calls me, then I'll know.

"To be honest with you, I've heard a little bit, but not enough to make me want to worry about it. But I'd definitely listen to it. It's smart, too. It's kind of dumb not to. The past season is done, but I've still got a long way to go.

"It is what it is. I'll take it as it goes. Kind of go with the flow day by day."

Tillman is one of 10 arbitration-eligible Orioles without a contract for 2015. Tommy Hunter settled Monday night.

The sides exchange figures on Friday and hearings are scheduled in February.

"To be honest, I haven't really talked to (Horwits) all that much," Tillman said. "I know it's coming up this weekend and I'm sure we'll sit down and talk about it, but up to this point I've been busy with the wedding and doing all this stuff. I'm kind of focusing on that, getting myself ready. But I'm sure real shortly we'll be talking about it more."

Tillman went 13-6 with a 3.34 ERA in 2014. He's made a combined 67 starts and exceeded 200 innings in the last two seasons.

Pitcher Tanner Scott arrived in camp today with his left hand in a cast. He broke the pinky finger and is having it examined.

The Orioles selected Scott, a southpaw, in the sixth round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of Howard College in Texas. He went 1-5 with a 6.26 ERA in 10 games (eight starts) with the Gulf Coast League team.

Catcher Alex Murphy, the Calvert Hall graduate who underwent surgery on his left shoulder to repair a torn labrum, was cleared last week to start swinging a bat and started his hitting progression.

Murphy, drafted in the sixth round in 2013, suffered the injury in August while diving into a base on a pickoff attempt.

"I just dove back and landed weird and the shoulder popped out and I tore it," he said. "It was a pretty long process but the rehab definitely helped. Probably about three or four weeks ago was when it felt like it was 100 percent."
