Nyjer's Pilates Workout

So, you're looking for a New Year's resolution? Something you can stick with throughout 2010? Here's a helpful tip from Nats center fielder Nyjer Morgan: Pilates. Morgan began incorporating Pilates into his workout routine during the 2009 season and he quickly became a huge fan of the program.Nyjer-Morgan.jpg "I really can't tell you why," said Morgan. "The stretching...it helps you use your core. It's relaxing." Developed during World War I to rehabilitate soldiers returning from war, Pilates uses the mind to work on balance, flexibility, breathing and alignment. Many other athletes including Curt Schilling, David Beckham and Tiger Woods have used Pilates to work on strength and agility. Morgan aims for three classes per week. "I had tight hip flexors and I was pulling my hamstrings [in the past]," he said. "Last year, I didn't pull my hamstrings once. My hammies were solid all year." Though most of the work is completed on a mat, Pilates is a very challenging program. The popular exercise requires discipline, control and concentration. Simply put, it's tougher than it looks. "I'm not going to sugarcoat it," Morgan said. "But it works for me so I gotta stay with it." You can check out a Pilates class at any regional fitness facility or at one of the many specialized Pilates studios in the area. Happy New Year!
