O's game blog: It's Bundy against Sale at Oriole Park

After losing the last three games by 8-6, 12-3 and 13-2 scores, the Orioles could use some solid pitching today. They will host Boston in the second game of a three-game series at Oriole Park.

Over those last three games, two versus Toronto and last night's loss to Boston, O's pitchers have allowed 33 runs and 44 hits. They gave up three homers Thursday and six last night. The O's bullpen has been torched for 22 runs in the three games over 14 2/3 innings. The team ERA for the year jumped from 5.48 to 5.72 over the last three nights.

Boston (37-34) bashed two homers in the fourth and three in the fifth inning last night. The Red Sox hit 1,276 feet worth of homers in the fifth and 2,539 feet of homers in hitting six for the game. Boston had hit a season-high five homers Thursday against Texas and topped that Friday night.

Last night marked Boston's 27th game this season with double-digit hits and they are 21-6 in such games. They extended their extra-base hit streak to 85 regular season games, the longest active streak in the majors and the Red Sox's longest since 2004-05 (164 games). The Red Sox have hit a double in all 14 games in June, their longest streak since 21 straight games from Sept. 15, 2018 to April 23, 2019.

J.D. Martinez went 3-for-4 with two home runs last night. This was his third multi-home run game of the season and 13th of his career. His two-run home run in the fourth inning marked his 20th career home run and 50th RBI against the Orioles, and he became the sixth-active player to reach 20 home runs and 50 RBIs against Baltimore.

Trey Mancini slugged his 15th home run, a solo shot in the first inning. He is batting .310 (54-for-174) with seven home runs and 17 runs scored in the first inning. Mancini also singled in the sixth inning for his team-leading 22nd multi-hit game. In 46 career games against the Red Sox, he is hitting .311 (55-for-177) with eight home runs and 27 RBIs.

Right-hander Dylan Bundy (3-7, 4.50 ERA) gets the start today for the Orioles. In seven games since May 1, he is 3-2 with a 3.03 ERA. Bundy has allowed three earned runs or fewer seven straight games and in nine of his past 10 starts. In 17 career games against Boston, he is 3-7 with a 5.08 ERA and 1.513 WHIP.

Left-hander Chris Sale (2-7, 3.52 ERA) will make the start for the Red Sox. His ERA was 6.30 through April. But in his eight starts since then he is 2-2 with a 1.99 ERA with 88 strikeouts to 10 walks over 54 1/3 innings. Still Boston is just 4-10 in his 2019 starts.

On May 8, Sale fanned 14 O's without a walk in eight innings and he gave up just three hits and one earned run. In 19 career games (13 starts), he is 7-2 with a 2.54 ERA against the Orioles. In 12 career games (nine starts) in Baltimore, Sale is 6-1 with a 1.85 ERA and has averaged 13.1 strikeouts per nine innings.
