O's game blog: Jimmy Yacabonis takes the mound in Game 1

After allowing their most runs since the 2012 season in a 19-12 loss to Boston last night, the Orioles host the Red Sox this afternoon. It is the start of a long day of baseball with a day-night doubleheader that continues tonight at 7:05 p.m.

Boston crammed 19 runs into five at-bats last night with 16 hits. The Red Sox scored three in the first, two in fourth, six in the sixth, three in the seventh and five runs in the eighth. The Orioles had 17 hits, went 5-for-12 with runners in scoring position, produced three doubles and three homers, scored 12 and lost by seven.

The 31 total runs last night were the most combined runs at Oriole Park since the Orioles lost to the Rangers 30-3 on Aug. 22, 2007. The Orioles are 2-11 against the Red Sox for this season.

The Orioles' night marked the third time in the modern era (since 1900) that a team has scored 10 or more runs with 15 or more hits in four straight home games. The Colorado Rockies are the only other team to accomplish the feat, done twice (May 3-14, 2000 - four games, and June 27-30, 1996 - four games).

Mark Trumbo singled in the first and sixth innings and slugged his 17th home run in the eighth. Trumbo extended his current hitting streak to a career-high-tying 12 games averaging .404 (19-for-47) with five home runs, 11 runs, 14 RBIs and two walks during this stretch. It is the third time in his career he has hit safely in 12 straight (also June 16-28, 2018 and Aug. 29-Sept. 10, 2015 while with Seattle).

Adam Jones played in right field for the first time as an Oriole, with Cedric Mullins getting the start in center. Jones went 3-for-5 with three singles and two RBIs. He recorded his team-leading 32nd multi-hit game and it was his 14th three-hit game. Jones has hit safely in eight straight against Boston, batting .429 (15-for-35) during this stretch. He stole second in the fourth inning, his third of the season and the 86th steal of his Orioles career. He passes Don Buford for sole possession of 10th place on the Orioles all-time list.

On the mound this afternoon, right-hander Jimmy Yacabonis (0-0, 7.15 ERA) gets the start for the Orioles. He has made four big league appearances with two starts in 2018. His last start was July 9 against the Yankees when he allowed three runs over five innings.

Yacabonis has gone 3-4 with a 4.23 ERA this season for Triple-A Norfolk. Over his past two starts for the Tides he gave up seven runs in 2/3 of an inning and three in 1 1/3 innings. That is 10 runs allowed in two innings in those games.

Lefty David Price (11-6, 3.93 ERA) gets the Game 1 start for Boston. Over his past three starts his ERA is 1.33. In 26 career starts versus Baltimore he is 13-5 with a 2.77 ERA.
