Orioles option Hart to make room for Gilmartin (O's down 4-0)

The Orioles optioned left-hander Donnie Hart to Triple-A Norfolk today to make roster room for southpaw reliever Sean Gilmartin, the former first-round pick whose contract was selected from the Tides.

Gilmartin joins Tanner Scott and Paul Fry as lefties in an eight-man bullpen.

Hart-Throws-Orange-Sidebar.jpgHart has registered a 5.79 ERA and 2.286 WHIP in 15 appearances this season. He's allowed nine earned runs (10 total) and 24 hits and walked eight batters in 14 innings.

In 27 games with the Tides, Hart has allowed only seven earned runs with eight walks and 39 strikeouts in 33 1/3 innings for a 1.89 ERA and 1.17 WHIP.

Gilmartin has a 3.14 ERA and 1.047 WHIP in seven games (three starts) with Norfolk after the Orioles signed him last month to a minor league deal.

Gilmartin is wearing No. 63.

"I know he hasn't been there very long," manager Buck Showalter said. "He can give us some innings today, potentially. I hope we don't need it, but we've got to prepare for it.

"We talked to Griff (Mike Griffin) and people who have had him, what type of mix he has and what we could expect. Hopefully, it works out."

Gilmartin would be the 51st player used by the Orioles this season.

Showalter hasn't decided how Monday's off-day will affect the rotation.

"We've been looking at it," he said. "We might stay on task. A lot depends on what happens in these next three games, and if we have to send some people out for our bullpen. Then, we may keep everybody in turn.

"They've had a lot of extra rest, so we might keep everybody in turn - I'm talking about (Dylan) Bundy, (Andrew) Cashner and (Alex) Cobb - and see where we are with the rest of it."

On this date in 1991, White Sox left-hander Wilson Alvarez threw the last no-hitter at Memorial Stadium in a 7-0 win over the Orioles. Alvarez is the pitching coach for the Gulf Coast League Orioles.

Update: Eduardo Núñez hit a two-run homer off Jimmy Yacabonis in the fifth and Jackie Bradley Jr. added a solo shot to give the Red Sox a 3-0 lead. They scored again in the sixth on Xander Bogaerts' one-out double off Sean Gilmartin, a stolen base and catcher Austin Wynns' throwing error.
