O's game blog: Orioles look to run win streak to seven against Detroit

The Orioles have been getting some real solid pitching most of this season and we've seen them deliver a real nice stretch of pitching during their current six-game win streak.

The O's staff has given up three runs or less in five of those six wins, allowing 15 runs total with a team ERA of 2.33 during this streak. The O's bullpen has not allowed a run in 14 2/3 innings during the winning stretch.

The win streak has lifted the Orioles' record to 22-12 as they host the Tigers tonight in the third game of a four-game series. Outscoring their opponents 38-15 the last six games, the Orioles are a season-high 10 games over the .500 mark and are 15-5 at home this year.

wright-pitching-white-tall.jpgTonight's pitching matchup features right-hander Mike Wright (1-3, 5.83 ERA) against Detroit right-hander Anibal Sanchez (3-3, 5.89 ERA).

Wright is pitching on six days' rest after going five innings last Saturday afternoon in Game 1 of a doubleheader against Oakland. He gave up 10 hits and five runs. Wright has allowed four or more runs in eight of his 14 career starts. But we also saw Wright pitch 14 1/3 scoreless innings in his first two big league starts last May.

Lefty batters are hitting .393 with an OPS of .903 in 2016 against Wright and right-handed batters are hitting .228. He has allowed an average of .419 to leadoff batters in an inning, getting himself into trouble too often to start an inning.

Over his last last five starts, Sanchez is 1-3 with a 6.92 ERA, allowing five homers in 26 innings. Over seven starts for the season, his WHIP is 1.636 and he has allowed 5.4 walks per nine innings. He is 2-1 with a 5.09 ERA in four career starts versus Baltimore.

The Orioles had 12 hits in Thursday's 7-5 comeback win over Detroit but just four hits in last night's 1-0 win. Adam Jones' homer in the sixth inning off Justin Verlander was the 200th of his career and drove in the game's only run. Over his past four games, Jones is 9-for-18 (.500) with three homers and seven RBIs. He is batting .407 (11-for-27) during a six-game hitting streak.

One final note on the Orioles pitchers: The O's team ERA right now is 3.47 to rank fourth best in the American League. In 2014 when the Orioles won 96 games, their team ERA was 3.43 to rank third in the AL.

There will not be a postgame wrap-up report here tonight, so feel free to stay in this entry with postgame comments after the game.
