O's game blog: Tonight's game and Brady Anderson wins Home Run Derby

The Orioles have had a few solid wins recently with a chance to build some positive momentum, only to follow up those victories with more losing. They will try to reverse that trend tonight.

The Orioles (60-62) host the Los Angeles Angels (62-60) in the second game of a three-game series. They won 9-7 on Manny Machado's walk-off grand slam in the ninth last night.

Over his last 12 games, Machado is batting .370 (20-for-54) with seven home runs (including three grand slams) and 25 RBIs. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he became the first player with at least 25 RBIs over a span of 12 games since Edwin Encarnacion had 26 over 12 games for the Blue Jays in 2015. Machado became just the 10th player in major league history (and first in Orioles history) to hit three grand slams in one calendar month. The last player to do so was Carlos Beltran with the Mets in July 2006.

Right-hander Kevin Gausman (9-8, 5.08 ERA) makes his 27th start of the season tonight and the 99th of his career. He got the win Monday at Seattle, allowing two runs over seven innings. Since June 27, Gausman is 6-1 with an ERA of 3.19 in 10 starts. Six times in that stretch, he gave up one run or less.

He took a loss on the West Coast trip at Anaheim on Aug. 9 - his only loss since June 21. He gave up four runs over 5 1/3. In four career games versus the Angels, he is 4-4 with a 5.11 ERA. Mike Trout is 5-for-10 with a homer against him.

Right-hander J.C. Ramirez (10-10, 4.26 ERA) makes his 27th appearance and 24th start for the Angels. In his 23 previous starts he is 8-10 with a 4.21 ERA. He allows a first inning ERA of 5.48, but one of only 3.96 after the opening inning. In three career games (one start) versus Baltimore, he is 0-1 with a 7.27 ERA.

The 1992 Home Run Derby champ: Orioles vice president of baseball operations and former outfielder Brady Anderson can still swing it. He won the five-man Home Run Derby competition tonight at Camden Yards, beating Sam Horn 5-4 in the final. Five members of the 1992 Orioles competed as part of the club's 25th anniversary season celebration of Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Players got one point for hitting a ball over a rope that was 300 feet from the plate. They got three points for hitting an actual homer over the fence.

In the first round, with each player getting 10 swings, Anderson scored eight points to six for Horn. Horn hit two actual homers to one for Brady. with both reaching the flag court. Chris Hoiles homered to left-center and had four points. while Mike Devereaux had one point and Joe Orsulak didn't homer.

Horn went first in the final round and scored four points for four 300-foot homers. Anderson went second and hit five 300-foot homers on his first eight swings of 10 scheduled to win.
