DETROIT - The Orioles came back with late runs. But their bullpen could not keep Detroit from scoring. A wild end to the game featured four runs scored by each team over the last two innings.
But when second baseman Dixon Machado homered to left off Pedro Araujo on the second pitch of the last of the ninth, the Tigers produced a 6-5 walk-off win over the Orioles.
The Orioles remain winless on their road trip at 0-5. They have lost seven of eight games and are 5-13 for the season.
Machado hit his first career walk-off homer on a 1-0 pitch to end a wild game at Comerica Park, one that featured home runs from unexpected sources.
The Orioles were three outs from a loss in the top of the ninth when Luis Sardiñas pinch-hit for struggling Caleb Joseph and hit a game-tying homer. His homer to right off Detroit closer Shane Greene made it a 5-5 game. It was his fifth major league homer in his 485th plate appearance.
In the Detroit eighth, after the Orioles had moved ahead 4-2 in the top half of the frame, Detroit backup catcher John Hicks hit a three-run homer down the left-field line off Darren O'Day to give the Tigers the lead. Hicks' homer with one out followed a double by Nicholas Castellanos and a Victor Martinez single. He hit a first-pitch slider for the go-ahead homer.
Down 2-1 as the eighth began, the Orioles faced lefty reliever Daniel Stumpf. Trey Mancini doubled to left to lead off the inning and went to third on Craig Gentry's bunt single. He was looking to advance the runner and reached himself.
Right-hander Drew VerHagen came on. Manny Machado smoked a single to center to tie the game 2-2 and put runners on the corners. Adam Jones followed with a sac fly to center and the Orioles had a 3-2 lead. One out later Chris Davis just missed hitting a two-run homer to left. His fly ball hit off the top of the wall fo an RBI single and 4-2 lead.
Early in the game, the clubs traded solo homers for a 1-1 tie. Baltimore's Danny Valencia hit his second of the season for a 1-0 lead in the second. He drilled a 3-2 changeup from lefty Matthew Boyd 418 feet to left. That was just the third O's homer over the past seven games.
Detroit drew even when third baseman Jeimer Candelario led off the third with a homer to right. He hit Kevin Gausman's 90.8 mph fastball a distance of 404 feet for his second homer of the season.
Gausman didn't get away with a mistake in the sixth, and it broke the 1-1 tie. Miguel Cabrera hit a hanging slider out to left for his second homer and a 2-1 lead. On his 35th birthday, Cabrera hammered a 1-1 pitch 360 feet to left.
For Cabrera, it was career homer No. 464, breaking a tie with Adrián Beltré for 35th in major league history. He's one homer away from tying Dave Winfield (465) for 34th. In 64 career games against the Orioles, he has hit 21 homers with 63 RBIs.
Gausman got a no-decision and became the latest starter to throw a good game, yet not get a win. Over six innings plus he allowed nine hits and two runs with no walks and four strikeouts. He threw 97 pitches.
O's starters have now recorded eight quality starts, but the team is only 3-5 in those games.
In the series finale on Thursday afternoon, Alex Cobb (0-1, 17.18 ERA) faces right-hander Jordan Zimmermann (0-0, 8.18 ERA).
