The Orioles have reached an anniversary tonight that they won't celebrate.
Exactly one year ago, they played the first no-fans game against the White Sox at Camden Yards. Empty seats except for a couple of scouts. Almost forgotten is the final score, an 8-2 win for the Orioles.
Two games were postponed and a series against the Rays was moved to St. Petersburg, Fla. due to civil unrest following the death of Freddie Gray, who died while in police custody. The starting time for this game was changed after Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake imposed a 10 p.m. curfew that lasted through the weekend.
"After conversations with the Orioles and local officials, we believe that these decisions are in the best interests of fan safety and the deployment of city resources," said Commissioner Rob Manfred.
The game lasted only 2 hours, 3 minutes. The Orioles scored six runs off Jeff Samardzija in the first inning, three coming on Chris Davis' homer to right field. The ballpark was so quiet, everyone on the field and inside the press box could hear Gary Thorne's call on MASN.
I'll never forget Adam Jones, standing on the on-deck circle, looking up and pointing at reporters after eavesdropping on a conversation.
The lineup included Alejandro De Aza, Jimmy Paredes, Delmon Young, Everth Cabrera and Rey Navarro. David Lough was used as a defensive replacement.
Ubaldo Jimenez allowed two unearned runs in seven innings. Kevin Gausman tossed a scoreless eighth, striking out two, and Zach Britton finished up.
"I just remember it being really weird," Gausman said. "I think one of the coolest things was, there was a big group of fans who were out in center field outside the stadium. They were watching the game and cheering and we could hear them and stuff, so that was pretty cool.
"The weirdest thing was being in the bullpen during the game - Ubaldo started that game and pitched really well, too - and hearing the umpires talk to each other. They'd be like, 'Two outs, you're covering second.' Stuff like that. And you could hear it. That was really weird. And then when I came into the game, I could hear the broadcast.
"It felt like one of those B games that we play in spring training sometimes that start at like 9:30 in the morning and nobody's there."
The teams will play tonight at 7:05 p.m. Gates will open at the usual time.
Mike Wright is making his second career start against the White Sox. He faced them in Game 2 of the May 28 makeup doubleheader and allowed three runs and six hits in five innings in a 6-3 win. Adam Eaton hit a leadoff home run, and Adam LaRoche also homered.
Left-hander Carlos Rodon is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in two career outings against the Orioles. He allowed four runs (three earned) and four hits in five innings in a July 5 start in Chicago, walking four batters and striking out seven. He also worked a scoreless inning in relief at Camden Yards.
The current Orioles are 2-for-17 against Rodon. Jonathan Schoop is 1-for-2 with a home run and Jones is 1-for-3 with a double.
Jones went 2-for-4 last night to raise his average to .217. His other multi-hit game was on April 15.
Davis has hit 98 home runs at Camden Yards and is two shy of joining Jones and Rafael Palmeiro as the only players with at least 100.
Mark Trumbo has hit safely in 12 of his last 13 games, batting .320/.370/.600 with two doubles, four home runs, 13 RBIs, three walks and seven runs scored.
Has anyone noticed that Nolan Reimold is batting .321 in 12 games? He had two more hits last night.
Reimold also has a .367 on-base percentage.
Hyun Soo Kim is 6-for-11. Let's cut him some slack. He should be coated in rust, but he came off the bench last night and lined a single into left field.
