Machado on his grand slam and more, plus other clubhouse quotes

The Orioles were already leading the Chicago White Sox by four runs when Manny Machado batted against Jake Petricka with the bases loaded in the sixth inning.

He looked to put a jolt into the ball and he did. Machado hit his second career grand slam and drove in a career-high five runs in the Orioles' 10-2 win over the White Sox.

Beating the team with the best record in the league was not a bad way to start a 10-game homestand.

"Just going up there being aggressive," Machado said of his slam. "Keeping my same approach. I don't know what he was going to try to do, but I was trying to do some damage there. He left a pitch up and I took advantage of it. Just being myself.

"Feels good to be back home. It was a rough couple of days on the road and we're excited to be back here in front of the crowd. Get that W. Hopefully we get this long homestand on the way and this was a good way to start."

Machado's only previous big league slam came on June 1, 2014 in Houston off Scott Feldman. The O's hit three homers in the cold of the Yard tonight.

"Yeah. Couple didn't go out, just because of the wind and when the rain was coming down. We've got big boys over here. You know, when we hit the ball, the ball is going to go out. Just have to keep doing what we've been doing," Machado said.

Chris Davis earlier hit a two-run homer. He was asked about Machado's improvement as a player last year that has carried into this season.

"I think it is a combination of things," Davis said. "He is starting to buy into our philosophy. Cooley (hitting coach Scott Coolbaugh) has really been trying to instill in us the fact we need to stay patient and pass the baton, so to speak. Manny is learning a lot about himself and it's been really fun to watch."

The Orioles are now 8-1 at home and they've hit 13 homers in those games. They just have a good feeling hitting in their home park right now.

"Yeah absolutely," Davis said. "We were ready to come home and play in front of our own fans. It was a good night for everybody. I was real proud of Tyler (Wilson) for hanging in there. Would have been easy to get down early, but he's a competitor and did a great job tonight."

Davis was asked if it was tough to hit the ball far in the Camden Yards chill tonight?

"It didn't seem like it for us. The conditions probably weren't favorable, but you can't let that bother you. As an offense we did a great job of not trying to do too much, just take what the game gave us," he said.

Davis and Mark Trumbo hit back-to-back homers in the third inning when the Orioles took a 5-2 lead. So it was a three-homer night for the Orioles.

"We all put really good swings on them," Trumbo said. "It would have been a shame if they didn't go, because, when you hit it like that, it is nice to be rewarded. Maybe we hit them early enough in the night that it traveled. Manny killed that one. The one I got was a 3-1 count. Got it on the barrel. Took a shot and it kind of worked out."

On the mound, Wilson's pitch count elevated in the fifth inning and was 91 for a game where he fell one out short of qualifying for a win. He threw 70 pitches in his first start on Saturday. He allowed four hits and two runs over 4 2/3 innings.

"Yeah, I definitely wanted to go deeper in the game than I did," he said. "Just for the sake of pitching deep and saving the bullpen. Obviously in the fifth inning I wanted to do a little better job.

"Physically, I feel strong. Feel good going out there every fifth day and like I tell you guys, I'm excited to take the ball in whatever capacity it is. Our guys swung the bats like crazy tonight. You are not going to be able to keep that lineup down for long. Once again, you can't say enough about the bullpen."

Wilson said he enjoyed the Orioles offensive outburst and enjoyed watching Machado have another big night.

"It's pretty special to watch," he said. "It is real exciting to have a front row seat to watch that guy play and so many other guys play. We have so much talent out there. It is fun to watch, not only the talent, but how everybody meshes together and competes every single time out there."

Machado's slam was the first by the Orioles this year. They had six last season. The Orioles have the best home record in the majors at 8-1 with an ERA of 2.09. With this win, Buck Showalter passed Chuck Tanner for 30th on the all-time managing wins list at 1,353. The Orioles recorded a season-high 15 hits and their 10 runs and 15 hits was the most allowed in a game by the Sox staff this season.
