Orioles announce 2020 coaching staff

The 2020 Orioles coaching staff is now official.

The hiring of Anthony Sanders as first base coach, Fredi González as major league coach and Darren Holmes as bullpen coach have been announced after various reports surfaced over the past four weeks.

Sanders replaces Arnie Beyeler and González replaces José Hernández, who shifts to assistant hitting coach, the role previously held by Howie Clark. Holmes replaces John Wasdin.

Beyeler, Clark and Wasdin weren't retained for next season.

The Orioles are bringing back Doug Brocail as pitching coach, Don Long as hitting coach, Tim Cossins as major league field coordinator/catching instructor and José Flores as third base coach.

Chris Holt was promoted from minor league pitching coordinator to director of pitching, but he isn't part of the major league staff.

Sanders' deal was finalized on Nov. 25.

A gold medal winner on the 2000 Olympic team, Sanders has spent the past 14 seasons as a manager, coach and instructor in the Rockies system. He's served most recently as outfield and baserunning coordinator and also worked on the USA Baseball coaching staff.

Sanders, 45, is a former outfielder who appeared in 13 games with the Blue Jays and Mariners from 1999-2001.

News of González's hiring broke on Dec. 5. He managed the Marlins from 2007-2010 and the Braves from 2011-16. He served as Marlins third base coach from 2017-19 and informed the team in October that he wanted to explore other options.

González, 55, has ties to Orioles manager Brandon Hyde from their tenure in the Marlins organization. Hyde was a minor league manager in the system and earned a promotion as Marlins interim bench coach on June 23, 2010 after González was fired.

The 555 games managed by González are the most in Marlins history and his 276 wins rank second behind Jack McKeon (281)

Holmes, 53, was hired last week after serving as Rockies bullpen coach since 2015. He also held the title of assistant pitching coach.

The Rockies replaced Holmes last month with minor league pitching coordinator Darryl Scott.

Holmes spent the 2014 season as the Braves' biomechanics pitching consultant. Before working in professional baseball, he served as the director of sports performance at the Acceleration Sports Institute in Greenville, S.C., where he was responsible for overseeing the training of Olympic, professional, collegiate and high school athletes with a focus on the biomechanics of pitching.

The data-driven background makes him a comfortable fit with the Orioles.

The previous link to the Orioles came as a reliever in 2000, when Holmes made five appearances before his release. He allowed 13 runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Holmes earned a World Series ring with the 1998 Yankees as part of his 13-year career.

Brocail, Long, Cossins and Flores were hired before the 2019 season as part of Hyde's first staff.
