Russell staying in dugout, Kirby could change roles

If the Orioles stick to their plan, they won't announce their coaching staff until after hiring their president of baseball operations. Though they don't anticipate any objections, they'd still rather allow their new executive to give final approval on manager Buck Showalter's staff. The Orioles must make two hires, though the job descriptions aren't settled. John Russell will remain as bench coach, which leaves a vacancy at third base following Willie Randolph's departure. However, one possibility is moving first base coach Wayne Kirby across the diamond and hiring someone to take his spot. I'm told that Kirby has coached third base in the minors and the Orioles are confident that he can handle it, so that's one option. It hasn't been decided whether Rick Adair will remain as pitching coach or go back to the bullpen, where he started the season before replacing Mark Connor. Either way, it adds up to two hires. I've heard that Mike Bordick "isn't out of the question," but he might not want to spend that much time away from home. It's safe to say that his name has come up in discussions, but so have plenty of others. Also, the Orioles could choose to interview Rangers assistant general manager Thad Levine, since he's on their list of candidates to replace Andy MacPhail. I hear it could potentially happen during an off-day in the World Series, rather than after a champion has been crowned, though that's just speculation at this point. Not sure how the Rangers or MLB would feel about it. Either way, he's still an unlikely hire by the Orioles. Remember how I referred to Jerry Dipoto as Duke or UConn on your GM bracket? Levine, despite his childhood attachment to the Orioles, looks more like Coastal Carolina or Winthrop. But it's a fluid bracket, just like the list. And finally, a reminder that Showalter and his wife, Angela, have teamed up with KidsPeace to host the second annual KidsPeace Trick-or-Trot 5K run/1M walk on Saturday, Oct, 29 in Canton. This family event is open to all ages and features Halloween activities in addition to the race. Families who plan to walk the one mile together will pay just $20 and are encouraged to dress in their favorite Halloween costumes. Race day registration begins at 7:30 a.m., and the race will begin at 9 a.m. The course goes through the Canton and Patterson Park neighborhoods, beginning and ending at O'Donnell Square in Canton. The top three registered teams who raise the most money will be eligible to win gift certificates, a complimentary wine tasting, 2012 Orioles tickets and more. In addition, there will be prizes for top runners, age group winners and most creative Halloween costumes for adults, children and pets. After the completion of the race, participants can join the Showalters, the Oriole Bird and the Chik-fil-A Cow for light fare and Halloween fun in O'Donnell Square. In addition to race day, on Friday, October 28 from 5:00 p.m. - 8 p.m. there will be a Pre-Race Party at O'Donnell Square. Participants may pick up their race packets, listen to live music, enjoy a discounted dinner at one of the race sponsors' restaurants and browse the shops on the square.
