The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on an error by Athletics third baseman Josh Donaldson that scored Manny Machado, who singled, advanced to second on Robert Andino's fly ball to center field and took third on Nate McLouth's fly ball to right. Machado must have heard about Coco Crisp's weak arm in center. Or first base coach Wayne Kirby yelled, "Go!" Manager Buck Showalter told reporters in Oakland that Chris Tillman most likely will start Monday in Seattle. Makes sense when you consider that Tillman is 3-0 with a 0.83 ERA against the Mariners, the team that traded him to the Orioles in the Erik Bedard deal. Nick Markakis, visiting the MASN booth tonight, told Gary Thorne and Jim Palmer that he'll get the "annoying" cast on his right hand removed in about 10 days. A lighter cast will replace it. Markakis said he'll probably get the pins removed from his thumb while the team is in St. Petersburg to end the regular season. Markakis could rejoin the lineup if the Orioles make the playoffs. I've heard the second round is a realistic goal. Will he have to wrestle the leadoff spot away from McLouth? Speaking of the playoffs, the Orioles sit alone atop the America League East standings tonight after the Rays beat the Yankees, 6-4. A win over the A's would give them a one-game lead over New York. Update: Yoenis Cespedes hit a two-run homer off Joe Saunders in the bottom of the fourth, but Chris Davis tied the game with a solo shot in the top of the fifth. Davis has 26 homers this season, and three in his last seven games. I'm guessing that most fans gladly would have taken 26 home runs from Davis this season. Update II: Saunders appears to be done after six innings. He allowed three runs and seven hits, walked two, struck out six, surrendered a home run and threw a wild pitch. He was lifted after 101 pitches with the Orioles trailing, 3-2. Jake Arrieta has warmed up twice tonight, which would suggest that he's not a candidate to start Sunday. Left-hander Randy Wolf and right-hander Steve Johnson are in the running. Update III: The Orioles remain in a first-place tie with the Yankees after a 3-2 loss in Oakland. Matt Wieters singled to lead off the top of the ninth, but pinch-runner Xavier Avery was thrown out trying to steal to end the game. The Orioles are 27-8 in one-run games. Also, manager Buck Showalter revealed in his postgame interview on MASN that Wilson Betemit injured his wrist again and wasn't available to pinch-hit. His season appears to be over, but the club is sending him to Sarasota to have the wrist examined.
