Seeing Reds this weekend (plus notes and Reds lineup)

It's funny how almost 41 years have passed and I still associate the Cincinnati Reds with the 1970 World Series. It's not as funny when I link the Pittsburgh Pirates to the 1971 and '79 World Series. The Orioles begin their interleague homestand tonight against the Reds, who are making their first visit to Camden Yards. Edinson Volquez will try to lower his career 5.59 ERA against the Orioles. Game 1 of the '70 Series took place at Riverfront Stadium, the first time that the Fall Classic was played on an artificial surface, and the Orioles rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win 4-3. Here's the box score. Jim Palmer allowed three runs and five hits, and walked five batters, in 8 2/3 innings. Pete Richert picked up the save. The Orioles hit three home runs off Gary Nolan. Boog Powell had a two-run shot in the fourth, Elrod Hendricks tied the game with a solo shot in the fifth, and Brooks Robinson put the Orioles ahead in the seventh. Robinson also committed an error, but his defense was just fine in that Series. Ask Lee May. As the story goes, a reporter asked Robinson before Game 1 whether he would be able to play defense on the artificial grass. Robinson replied, "I'm a major league third baseman. If you want to go play in a parking lot, I'm supposed to stop the ball." The Reds haven't been in Baltimore since Game 5 on Oct. 15. The Orioles fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first before clinching the Series with a 9-3 victory. Mike Cuellar went the distance after a rocky start. Frank Robinson and Merv Rettenmund hit home runs, and Davey Johnson had three hits and two RBIs. After hearing that Brooks Robinson won the MVP award and a new Toyota, Reds catcher Johnny Bench said, "If we had known he wanted a car that badly, we'd all have chipped in and bought him one." Shameless plug alert: I'll be appearing on "The Mid-Atlantic Sports Report" from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on MASN before heading to Camden Yards. NOTES: The Reds have activated left-hander Aroldis Chapman from the disabled list and optioned left-hander Jeremy Horst to Triple-A Louisville. The postponed May 17 game between the Orioles and Red Sox at Fenway Park has been rescheduled for Sept. 19 at 1:05 p.m. as part of a day-night doubleheader. For the Reds: Heisey LF Phillips 2B Votto 1B Rolen 3B Bruce RF Gomes DH Stubbs CF Hernandez C Janish SS Volquez RHP Welcome back, Ramon Hernandez.
