BOWIE, Md. - Right-hander Alfredo Simon has exited today's game at Double-A Bowie after giving up a double and walk to the first two batters in the top of the sixth. Lefty Pedro Viola has come on.
Simon has given up just one run on five hits, but the runners on base are his responsibility. He walked three and fanned eight, throwing 94 pitches, 61 for strikes.
Simon had his best inning when he struck out the side on 15 pitches in the fifth. He gave up a run on two hits in the fourth.
The Baysox lead Richmond 4-1.
Ronnie Welty and Pedro Florimon hit solo homers for Bowie in the fourth. That came after Florimon and Carlos Rojas came up with RBI singles in the second to give the Baysox a 2-0 lead. Welty now has six homers on the season and that was number three for Florimon.
Bowie got four runs in 4 2/3 versus Richmond starter Ryan Verdugo. The 24-year-old lefty had allowed two earned runs or less in all five of his starts this season.
Update: After Simon left the game, there was an error at first base by Robbie Widlansky, a walk, wild pitch and groundout that plated three runs, two of which were charged to Simon. Richmond has tied the game at 4-4 as they bat in the seventh.
Simon's final line: 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R-ER, 3 BB, 8 K.
Simon's line was initially announced as two earned runs and changed to three runs, all earned, after the game.
Through two Baysox starts, Simon has pitched 10 innings, allowing 11 hits and seven runs (six earned) with three walks and 13 strikeouts. His ERA is 5.40 through two Bowie starts. We will post some quotes from Simon after the game.
