SALISBURY, Md. - After four and a half innings of the South Atlantic League All-Star game, the South team leads the North 6-2 at Perdue Stadium. The South plated five runs in the third, getting two-run homers from Adam Duvall and Cory Vaughn.
Single-A Delmarva's Manny Machado is 1-for-2 with a single and a run scored in the first and he struck out in the top of the third. His Shorebirds teammate, Ty Kelly, starting at second base, is 0-for-1 after a third-inning ground out.
Delmarva lefty Jacob Pettit just pitched a 1-2-3 top of the fifth. Pettit, a 42nd-round draft pick in 2010, is 5-2 on the year with an ERA of 3.74 in 13 games, 12 starts for Delmarva.
Before tonight's game here is what Machado said about playing on the same side tonight with Hagerstown's Bryce Harper.
"Me and Bryce go back a long time. We always talk. We played together on USA baseball," Machado said.
"It's a relief to be back on the same field as he is. He's a great player and hopefully we'll have some fun and a couple of laughs tonight and win this game."
Update: The South is now leading leading 6-3 after eighth innings. Machado flied out to left in the last of the seventh and is 2-for-4 with a run scored. He singled in the first and sixth. Delmarva's Ty Kelly is 0-for-3 with three groundouts. Kelly and Machado remain in the game as the top of the eighth starts and now Delmarva's Michael Ohlman is in at catcher for the North team.
Update two: The game ends with the South beating the North 6-3 in front of a sellout of 7,410 at Perdue Stadium. Machado finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Ty Kelly went 0-3 and both Machado and Kelly played the whole game at short and second. Ohlman caught the last two innings and went 0-for-1 in his lone at-bat.
Delmarva lefty Jacob Pettit pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning and David Walters of the Shorebirds pitched a scoreless top of the ninth.
