Span, Ramos homer in Nats' 2-1 win

Denard Span didn't waste any time lighting up the scoreboard this Memorial Day. The Nats' center fielder crushed a 2-2 fastball from Cubs starter Tsuyoshi Wada deep to right field to give the Nationals a quick 1-0 lead. Two of Span's four homers this season have led off games.

The Cubs answered in the bottom of the inning with a blast of their own. Rookie sensation, 23-year old Kris Bryant nailed a Tanner Roark slider just over the fence in the left-center alley. The solo shot is Bryant's sixth on the season.

Update: After the early scoring, the offenses quieted down in large part due to some stellar defense. With one on and two outs in the second, Michael A. Taylor saved a run with a sensational leaping grab to rob Wada of extra bases.

An inning later, Bryce Harper made a tremendous running grab on a hard hit liner by Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo to preseve the tie. Harper appeared to be favoring his right wrist after the play. After hauling in the ball, he used his right hand to brace himself against ivy-covered brick wall at Wrigley Field.

The wrist didn't seem to bother Harper in his next at-bat as he blistered a double down the right field line.

The scoreboard froze at 1-1 until the sixth when Wilson Ramos launched a solo homer over the wall in right-center. It's Ramos' third dinger on the season.

Roark threw a solid five innings in his first start of the season. He allowed only one run on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Roark lasted 66 pitches before right-hander Blake Treinin took over to start the sixth.

Treinen pitched two scoreless frames.

Update II: Drew Storen closed out the Cubs in the ninth to earn his National League-leading 15th save.

Roark gets his first win of the season.
