Hays starting for AL in All-Star Game (plus tonight's lineups and notes)

Austin Hays white jersey

Austin Hays vowed to play again before the All-Star break, a bruised left hip keeping him out of the lineup since Sunday.

The day he learned that he’d been selected to his first All-Star team.

Hays is on the bench again tonight, marked absent hours after he found out that he’s starting for the American League.

Baseball life is full of surprises for Hays, who said yesterday that the good news about his selection was “kind of short-lived” following his collision with Twins first baseman Donovan Solano. A knee to the hip bringing pain after his euphoria. The roller coaster that he didn’t want to ride.

He’s taking batting practice and working out, as he did yesterday in New York, and starting Tuesday night at T-Mobile Park due to injuries to Aaron Judge and Mike Trout.

O's activate Mychal Givens for series finale, plus today's lineup

Mychal Givens smile white

TORONTO - The Orioles are getting a reinforcement today for their heavily-used bullpen as right-hander Mychal Givens has been activated as the Orioles try to sweep Toronto today at Rogers Centre. Givens has not pitched in an O's game since March 16 in spring training.

But today he comes off the 15-day injured list - he's been out with left knee inflammation. To make roster room lefty Cole Irvin was optioned back to Triple-A Norfolk. Recalled Tuesday from the Tides, Irvin pitched just once since his return to the club and that was in yesterday's 6-5 Orioles win in 10 innings.

He faced two batters in the seventh inning, allowing an inherited run on an RBI single to Alejandro Kirk and he got a popout to the infield from Matt Chapman. He threw just seven pitches.

With Yennier Cano and Félix Bautista having pitched in both games of this series and very likely not available today, the O's are short in the bullpen today and enter Givens to provide a lift.

Orginailly drafted by the Orioles as a high school shortstop out of Tampa, Fla. in the second round in 2009, he was later converted to pitcher. The O's traded him on Aug. 30, 2020 to Colorado in a deal that brought the club Terrin Vavra, Tyler Nevin and a player to be named later that became minor league outfielder Mishael Deson.

Austin Hays is out of the lineup again with a deep cut on his right middle finger. Kyle Stowers gets the start in left field.

Gunnar Henderson is at third base. Adam Frazier is the second baseman.

Hays and Mateo out of today's Orioles lineup

Hays and Mateo out of today's Orioles lineup

Austin Hays is out of today's lineup, as the Orioles try to win their sixth series of the year.

Hays left last night’s game with a bruised right hand and is day-to-day.

Terrin Vavra is in left field again after replacing Hays last night and collecting two singles. Ryan Mountcastle is the designated hitter, with Ryan O’Hearn at first base.

Gunnar Henderson is the shortstop. Jorge Mateo goes to the bench.

Mateo is batting .406/.432/.750 (13-for-32) with five doubles and two home runs in his last 11 games (10 starts). Last night’s homer into the Orioles bullpen was 108.2 mph off the bat.

Orioles and White Sox lineups

CHICAGO – Adley Rutschman is the designated hitter this afternoon against the White Sox, as the Orioles try to guarantee another series win.

GettyImages-1418205723

SARASOTA, Fla. – The last exhibition game of 2023 will be played this afternoon, with the Cardinals driving across the state to face Orioles’ No. 2 starter Dean Kremer.

Félix Bautista is expected to make his last appearance and be deemed ready for Opening Day. Injuries in the bullpen make his availability even more important.

Mike Baumann also could make his final appearance while trying to wrestling away the last bullpen spot.

Manager Brandon Hyde has posted a lineup that contains most of his projected starters. Austin Hays and Kyle Stowers aren’t in it against St. Louis left-hander Jordan Montgomery, but Gunnar Henderson is the designated hitter and Ramón Urías is playing third base.

That could happen again.
