Tied no more (updated twice!)

Willy Aybar's two-out single in the 12th inning scored Carlos Pena to give Tampa Bay a 10-9 lead. Pena stole second base as Gabe Kapler struck out, and he took third on catcher Craig Tatum's throwing error. Aybar jumped on the next pitch from Alfredo Simon and lined it into right field. Simon gave the Orioles 2 2/3 innings tonight, his highest mark of the season, after pitching one inning last night. I guess that elbow is holding up. Simon's previous high was 1 2/3, which he reached twice. The bullpen wasn't in great shape tonight, but Simon consumed innings and almost kept the teams even heading into the bottom of the 12th. Almost. Aybar's single was the only hit allowed by Simon, who threw 44 pitches, including 18 over his first two innings. Mark him down as unavailable tomorrow afternoon. Update: Tied again. Corey Patterson led off the bottom of the 12th with a double off Grant Balfour, and he took third on Ty Wigginton's deep fly ball to right off Dan Wheeler. Adam Jones walked to put runners on the corners with one out, and Scott Moore lifted a sacrifice fly to center. Craig Tatum bounced to third. Tatum has three hits, but a few of us thought Jake Fox or Josh Bell would pinch-hit. Update II: Julio Lugo is smiling! He singled down the right field line off former Oriole Lance Cormier in the bottom of the 13th inning to score Cesar Izturis, who walked and took second on Felix Pie's sacrifice bunt. Orioles 11, Rays 10. Nothing to it. Triple-A Norfolk's MIchael Aubrey hit his 11th homer and drove in four runs, but Tim Bascom took the loss against Syracuse after allowing six runs and five hits in 1 2/3 innings. He also walked four, and his ERA with the Tides is 7.39. Single-A Frederick's Xavier Avery and Billy Rowell each had three hits tonight in a 7-4 loss to Lynchburg.
