Turner and Murphy get offense rolling (Nats win 3-2)

The Nationals went after Phillies southpaw Adam Morgan in the first inning. Trea Turner singled to lead off the frame.

With one out, Daniel Murphy doubled down the right field line. Turner scored all the way from first base and the Nationals lead 1-0 after one inning.

Left-hander Gio Gonzalez skated out of trouble in each of the first two frames. He allowed a walk in the first. In the second, the Phillies had two men on with no one out after a Danny Espinosa fielding error and an A.J. Ellis single. But Gonzalez was able to get Aaron Altherr to turn over a 5-4-3 double play and Freddy Galvis flew out weakly to left field to end the threat.

After an inning and a half, the Nationals lead the Phillies 1-0.

Update: Gonzalez has taken advantage of a pair of 5-4-3 double plays and has three strikeouts in his last four recorded outs. He has allowed three hits, but no runs, through five innings.

Turner has a pair of hits and now 22 stolen bases on the season. Midway point at Nats Park and the Nationals still lead 1-0 over the Phillies.

Update II: Gonzalez got through 6 1/3 innings without allowing a run. But Tommy Joseph erased the thought of a shutout with a solo homer well over the center field wall. Joseph's 18th homer of the year tied the game at 1-1 in the seventh.

Update III: Bryce Harper walked to lead off the seventh. After Morgan was lifted, right-hander Edubray Ramos faced Anthony Rendon. Ramos got off to a bad start, getting down 2-0 to Rendon, who took advantage by lacing a long double to left-center field. Harper easily scored and the Nationals regained the lead 2-1. Rendon moved to third on a groundout. He then came home on a passed ball by catcher A.J. Ellis. The pitch got away from Ellis and his toss back to home plate with Edubray Ramos covering was way over the pitcher's head. Rendon's run made it 3-1 Nationals.

Update IV: Freddy Galvis cranked a homer off of Koda Glover to begin the eighth and the Nationals lead was cut to 3-2.

Cesar Hernandez singled and Roman Quinn walked off of Blake Treinen. Andres Blanco then grounded into a 5-3 double play and the Nats are three outs away from victory.

Update V: Mark Melancon struck out the first two batters he faced in the ninth. Pinch-hitter Makiel Franco singled to right. D.C. native Emmanuel Burriss pinch-ran for Franco. Pinch-hitter Cody Asche struck out looking to end the game.

He earns his 41st save of the season, 11th with the Nationals.
