Ubaldo Jimenez seeking milestone win (O's win 6-5 in 13 innings)

If Ubaldo Jimenez registers his 100th career victory tonight, he will become the 11th Dominican-born pitcher to reach the milestone.

Hall of Famer Juan Marichal ranks first with 243 wins. Current Orioles pitching instructor Ramon Martinez owns 135 career wins.

Jimenez tossed a scoreless first inning tonight, striking out David Ortiz on his 25th pitch to strand Xander Bogaerts, who drew a two-out walk.

Center fielder Adam Jones received his Heart and Hustle Award before tonight's game. The honor was bestowed upon him by the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association.

Jones-Leaping-Catch.jpgThe award honors active players who demonstrate a passion for the game of baseball and best embody the values, spirit and tradition of the game. It's the only award voted on by former players.

Jones is a three-time recipient.

Before tonight's game, manager Buck Showalter talked about Tyler Wilson's potential role with the Orioles.

"I think we would lean more toward giving him a spot start," Showalter said. "Got some thoughts about it. Let's see how we get through the next three or four starts. I think his turn falls on where Mike (Wright) is pitching, but that doesn't mean Mike doesn't pitch. We can do some things.

"It's been a while since we've had another (starter) to pick from. Basically, we've had five. Usually this time of year, you're talking about who you're going to look at and what have you.

"Tyler is set up to pitch up here. He's ready to go."

Wilson is in the same position as Wright, a young pitcher trying to help the Orioles avoid elimination from the playoff race while also enhancing his value for 2016.

"He'll be facing teams with everything on the line, including us, we hope, so it's hard to get those situations back," Showalter said. "The same with all our guys. I'm sure everybody looks at kind of where we might be next year with the pitching things. You want to put yourself in a position to make good decisions, too. We're trying to win every game."

The Orioles chose to bring back first baseman Christian Walker, who batted .257/.342/ .515 with 12 doubles, one triple, 13 home runs and 44 RBIs in 54 games with Triple-A Norfolk following the break.

"I think Christian was very deserving," Showalter said. "His second half of the season, he almost carried the club offensively on a lot of nights. He had the type of second half he had almost all year last year. He made a lot of improvements at first base.

"Starting tomorrow, four out of six pitchers we're going to face will be left-handed starters, the way we have it projected with Tampa. We'll see left-handers (Matt Moore and Drew Smyly) the first two days there."

David Lough appeared in 76 games with the Orioles this season, but he wasn't recalled or placed on the taxi squad.

"We considered everybody," Showalter said. "He's off the (40-man) roster. I know he got hit by a pitch a few days ago.

"David, we considered it. The people that we had, we'll see."

Update: Steve Pearce hit a two-run homer in the third inning following J.J. Hardy's leadoff single to give the Orioles a 2-1 lead. Pearce has 11 home runs this season.

Boston led 1-0 in the top of the third after Jimenez issued a bases-loaded walk to Travis Shaw with two outs. Jimenez has thrown 61 pitches in three innings.

Gerardo Parra singled after Pearce's home run, Manny Machado reached on a force at second base and Chris Davis singled. Machado scored from first base on center fielder Mookie Betts' error.

Adam Jones singled - the fifth hit of the inning - and Joe Kelly left the game with an injury. Kelly won his last eight starts before tonight.

Matt Wieters greeted Craig Breslow with a sacrifice fly to left field to increase the lead to 4-1 in the third inning.

Update II: The Red Sox scored three runs in the fifth to tie the game and raise Jimenez's pitch count to 91.

Pablo Sandoval singled with two outs to produce the tying run. He was out at second base after the Orioles challenged the safe call.

Kelly left the game with right shoulder tightness and fatigue.

Update III: Machado broke the tie with his 29th home run with one out in the bottom of the fifth.

Update IV: Travis Shaw homered off Brian Matusz with one out in the eighth to tie the game 5-5. Matusz retired David Ortiz to end the seventh.

Four of the five home runs off Matusz this year have come against left-handed hitters.

Update V: The Orioles defeat the Red Sox 6-5 in 13 innings on Chris Davis' single into right field with no outs.

Gerardo Parra drew a leadoff walk against Jonathan Aro and Machado singled to put runners on the corners. Left-hander Robbie Ross entered the game and Davis singled on a 2-1 pitch.

The Orioles have won six of their last seven games. They're two below .500 for the first time since Aug. 28.
