Updates on Dylan Bundy, Jonathan Schoop and Matt Hobgood in Bowie

BOWIE, Md. - Right-hander Dylan Bundy, the Orioles' top pitching prospect, said after tonight's Double-A Bowie game that he had his scheduled follow-up MRI this morning.

The initial reading showed infllammation only in his right shoulder, as the first one showed on May 27. That appears to be good news for Bundy, meaning there is no structural damage in the shoulder.

Already coming back from Tommy John surgery in June 2013, Bundy was throwing well for the Baysox when he felt some discomfort in that shoulder the day after that last start on May 21.

He is not throwing for now but would certainly be expected to come back from his bout of shoulder inflammation if there is indeed nothing more problematic.

"Yeah, I don't think there is anything torn in there, and that is the main thing and that's good. I don't know everything yet. We are still waiting for more doctors to look at it (the MRI)," Bundy told MASNsports.com after Bowie's 5-3 comeback win over Trenton.

Bundy said the Orioles' team doctors had not yet read the results of this MRI.

"I don't think our main team doctor has looked at it yet," he said. "I know there is still some inflammation in there, so we have to wait and see and rest it still. I am sure we are going to send this (the MRI) to Dr. (James) Andrews too, just to be sure."

Bundy is 0-3 with an ERA of 3.68 over eight Bowie starts. He doesn't have any idea yet when he could resume throwing again.

"No sense of it right now," he said. "As long as there is inflammation in there and soreness, I can't really pick up a ball until it's gone. You don't want to risk it, start throwing early and cause more damage. So, just have to rest it."

Meanwhile Orioles second baseman Jonathan Schoop played and went 0-for-4 for Bowie tonight. He struck out in the first, third and fifth innings, and popped out to short in the seventh. He had not played in the field during extended spring training games but did tonight, handling the one ball hit his way easily.

Schoop played seven innings in what was the first day of his major league rehab stint. It will lead him back to the Orioles eventually, even if he isn't certain tonight what exact day that will be.

"Feel happy, excited, and like I've said, I feel better than before. I will come back and play here tomorrow night. But I feel really, really good. Feel strong," Schoop said in the Baysox clubhouse tonight as he played at the Double-A level for the first time since 2012.

How about those four at-bats?

"It was rough," he said. "I saw the ball pretty good but was a little bit late on a couple of pitches. I got some at-bats in Florida, but here is different. Try to come out tomorrow and do a better job."

Schoop has been on the Orioles disabled list since April 18 with a sprained right knee. He played in games at extended spring training in Florida before joining the Orioles earlier this week on Monday to work out with the team.

Tonight, he began his rehab assignment as Orioles vice president Brady Anderson looked on to keep tabs on Schoop. As for when the rehab stint ends and Schoop rejoins the Orioles, that date is not set yet.

"No, we don't know yet," Schoop said. "The only thing I can control is to play hard and see how it goes. I want to be up there as soon as possible, but I have to get ready first, 100 percent. I feel like I am ,but maybe I'm not. Let's see how it goes tomorrow.

"I feel good moving around, no pain. Today I went for that one ball and I didn't even think about it. Nothing in my head, no doubts. I was moving around good. I just want to come back here tomorrow and do a better job for them."

Before today's game the Baysox placed right-hander Matt Hobgood, the Orioles' 2009 first-round draft pick, on the disabled list for the second time this season. Bowie added right-handed pitcher Elih Villanueva from Triple-A Norfolk.

Hobgood got off to a good start for the Baysox, throwing 5 1/3 scoreless in his first two games but a DL stint soon followed and now he is back on the injured list.

Hobgood has been dealing with right shoulder discomfort. He had shoulder surgery in April 2012.

Bowie manager Gary Kendall provided an update after tonight's game.

"You know what, when he pitched on the road, the ball just wasn't coming out good," Kendall said. "He threw the ball so well in spring training to make our ballclub. Then he had some tenderness and went on the DL and came back and was activated. But the ball just wasn't coming out as well as it was earlier. Hopefully this is just a dead arm. Hopefully this is nothing serious.

"His velo had really climbed back in the low 90s earlier this year and his curveball had good action."

Hobgood is 1-1 with an 6.52 ERA in six Baysox outings. He gave up two runs in an inning on Wednesday. Hobgood's velocity was well down in recent outings, into the low to mid 80s. He is expected to undergo an MRA on his shoulder early next week.

As for tonight's game: Bowie scored four runs in the last of the eighth to produce a stirring 5-3 comeback win. Mike Yastrzemski had a three-run triple, and Glynn Davis an RBI single, during the rally as Bowie improved to 36-30. Rossmel Perez had three hits and is batting .331. Trey Mancini went 2-for-3 with an RBI double, and is batting .348 in 13 games since moving up from Single-A Frederick, with two homers, 11 RBIs and an OPS of 1.044.

Right-hander Joe Gunkel, acquired by the Orioles in the trade with Boston for Alejandro De Aza, gave up three runs over seven innings tonight after recording back-to-back scoreless starts to begin his O's career. Gunkel is 1-0 with a 1.35 ERA in three Baysox starts.

Orioles right-hander Miguel Gonzalez is scheduled to start in Bowie on Saturday on a major league rehab assignment. The first pitch in that game is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., and there will be fireworks after the game.
