Updating Brian Roberts (and bullpen coach)

Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts was reevaluated today by Dr. Michael Collins, a concussion specialist in Pittsburgh, and told to return again in two weeks. Roberts has tracked pop-ups, according to president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail, but his baseball activities are limited. He's mostly confined to conditioning exercises, and he's still experiencing mild headaches when exerting himself. While he's making progress, it's coming in small increments.

Today's news isn't nearly as encouraging as the Orioles had hoped. "It's still more of the same," MacPhail said. Roberts would have to go on an injury rehab assignment before coming off the disabled list, so there's no way he's back in the lineup before the All-Star break that begins July 11. Roberts hasn't played since leaving a May 16 game in Boston after diving into first base. J.J. Hardy has taken over the leadoff role, while Robert Andino makes most of the starts at second base. After being limited to 59 games last season, Roberts has appeared in only 39 this year. Also, The Sun's Jeff Zrebiec tweeted that minor league catching instructor Don Werner will take over as the team's bullpen coach on Friday and remain in that role until Aug. 1. The Orioles didn't want to disrupt their farm system, and possibly affect the development of their young players, by promoting a manager or pitching coach.
