López labors for two innings in 8-2 loss (updated)

Getting ahead in the count didn't work for Jorge López.

Falling behind didn't work, either.

The first inning had been the kindest for López among his seven starts, with no runs allowed and only five baserunners. But he was 0-2 tonight on DJ LeMahieu and Luke Voit, and issued a walk and surrendered a hit. He walked Aaron Judge with the count 3-1 to load the bases with no outs.

Lopez-Confers-With-Catcher-Orange-ST-Sidebar.jpgThe Yankees siphoned 39 pitches out of López and scored three runs, Judge hit his prerequisite homer in the second and the Orioles were beaten 8-2 before an announced sellout crowd of 10,767 at Camden Yards.

López was charged with two earned runs and three total in the first, able to dodge his removal with Tyler Wells warming. Judge launched his 23rd career homer against the Orioles in 59 games, a two-run shot in the second, and the Orioles fell to 16-23 overall and 5-15 at home.

Keegan Akin entered in the third and is no longer a candidate to start Sunday afternoon. Left-hander Bruce Zimmermann was expected to be recalled from Triple-A Norfolk, but manager Brandon Hyde didn't commit tonight.

"I'm thinking about it right now," Hyde said. "I might do an opener. We'll figure it out."

López followed his longest start of the season by recording only six outs, including Chance Sisco cutting down Tyler Wade attempting to steal. He allowed five runs (four earned) and six hits, with two walks and four strikeouts.

Hyde didn't need to see more than 71 pitches, which raised López's ERA to 6.35.

"He's been so good early in game, really all year," Hyde said. "Losing LeMahieu there, he just didn't have his command in the first inning and they jumped all over him, scoring five in the first couple innings just because his command wasn't the same as it had been."

Sisco's passed ball allowed the first run to score after Gio Urshela struck out looking at a 98 mph sinker. Gary Sánchez singled up the middle and the Yankees led 3-0.

The inning also included a hit batter, the same ball nailing Clint Frazier and plate umpire Roberto Ortiz. Voit's single was his first hit this season in 11 at-bats. Miguel Andújar collected his first last night.

Six of Judge's 11 home runs this season have come against the Orioles. His outs are just as loud.

López wasn't available to speak after the game.

Akin tossed three scoreless innings, then loaded the bases with one out in the sixth on some soft contact. Wells committed a balk before throwing a pitch to give New York a 6-0 lead and Voit delivered two-run single with two outs.

Voit has 10 home runs and 34 RBIs in 29 career games against the Orioles. No opponent takes more abuse.

Wells' line was fine, with no runs, one hit and four strikeouts, including Judge, in 1 2/3 innings.

Though charged with three runs, Akin impressed and could be pushing for a return to the rotation. He was aided in the fourth by a dazzling 4-6-3 double play with Freddy Galvis and Pat Valaika on the left side of the infield in the shift and the former hurdling Wade while making the throw.

The prettiest component of a game that turned ugly.

"Huge," Hyde said of Akin's outing. "Really disappointed that those three runs scored there that inning because it doesn't tell the story of how well he threw. I was really encouraged watching him with how aggressive he was, attacking a good lineup, using multiple pitches, really keeping the ball off the barrel, working ahead and throwing a ton of strikes. Pitch count was down, so that was extremely encouraging watching him throw.

"He's only had a few weeks in the big leagues, so we still believe in his starter profile, we're still going to stretch him out as a starter. He gave us some long relief here in this stretch and it was nice to see him out there today almost finishing four innings. I was just really impressed with how he threw the ball tonight."

The Orioles loaded the bases against Domingo Germán with one out in the third and Austin Hays grounded into a 5-4-3 double play. The replay showed his foot hitting the bag ahead of the throw, but the call stood.

Rio Ruiz led off with a single, Sisco doubled with one out and Cedric Mullins walked to set up the latest frustration for the Orioles.

Galvis grounded into a double play to end the fourth after Trey Mancini's leadoff bloop single into right field. Mancini collected his team-leading 31st RBI in the sixth on a ground ball that scored Sisco, who led off with a walk and moved up on Mullins' single and Hays' fielder's choice.

Hyde cleared his bench in the eighth to provide some rest for Mancini, Mullins and Galvis. Ryan McKenna was inserted into left field and he robbed Sánchez of a three-run homer in the ninth with a leaping catch at the fence. Shawn Armstrong escaped with two scoreless innings.

Ramón Urías, plugged into Galvis' spot, had a run-scoring single in the bottom of the ninth.

Germán faced the Orioles on April 28 in Baltimore shut them out on three hits over seven innings. Tonight's performance, with one run in six innings, lowered his career ERA against them to 2.29 in 43 1/3.

Down on the farm, Mike Baumann's 2021 debut with Single-A Delmarva lasted two innings and 37 pitches, 17 for strikes. He didn't allow a run or hit, walked three batters and struck out two.

The Shorebirds led 11-0 after 2 1/2 innings.

Anthony Santander was the designated hitter tonight at Double-A Bowie and went 0-for-4 with a walk, strikeout and run scored. Adley Rutschman had a double, walk and two RBIs.

Single-A Aberdeen's Grayson Rodriguez struck out 11 batters and walked none tonight in five innings. He allowed one run.
