A few notes leading up to this morning's workout

VIERA, Fla. - They're calling for some more rain today here, but the Nationals might luck out again. It looks like the showers won't hit us until mid-afternoon, by which point the Nats will be off the fields and will have their workout behind them. That's chief meteorologist Dan Kolko with that report. The live batting practice sessions we saw over the weekend have been put on hold for a day, but they're scheduled to be a part of tomorrow's workout. All pitchers who haven't been affected by injury, rain or other scheduling quirks have been through one live batting practice session to this point. Among those who haven't, to my knowledge: Ryan Mattheus (apparent chest injury), Tyler Clippard (who was slowed a few days by some back tightness), Ross Ohlendorf (who was slowed a few days by discomfort in his side), Drew Storen (personal schedule), Rafael Soriano (personal schedule), and Taylor Jordan and Chris Young, whose sessions were interrupted by rain after just a few pitches. Clippard is set to throw his first bullpen session in nearly a week today, this after taking part in yesterday's workout in full. The right-hander is currently long-tossing out on the main field here at Space Coast Stadium, preparing for his mound work, as is Storen. We might see Storen get in a bullpen session today, as well, making up for the fact that he's yet to throw live BP. Manager Matt Williams said yesterday that he won't be holding an interquad game leading up to Friday's Grapefruit League opener at Port St. Lucie against the Mets. He'll announce his starter for that game following tomorrow's workout. Gio Gonzalez and Doug Fister are among those set to throw live BP tomorrow, so one of them might be the one tabbed to start on Friday. Pure speculation there, but if Williams goes with one of those two, it would allow them two full days off from throwing before then taking the mound against the Mets. Don't read too much into whoever Williams tabs for Friday's start, however. It's just the Grapefruit League opener, and in no way indicates who will start come opening day. There's a section on today's schedule that's called "Pitchers Hitting Game'" I have no idea what that will consist of or what the game is, but it could be interesting. We'll have to see whether Livan Hernandez is a part of that drill in some capacity. Sounds like it's tailor-made for him.
