Are the Nationals looking for a catcher?

If Wilson Ramos' 2015 season was a stock chart, it would drive you crazy on whether to buy or sell. There were plenty of highs: staying healthy resulting in a career-best 128 games played, catching both of Max Scherzer's no-hitters, tying for the major league lead by throwing out 44 percent of potential basestealers and receiving recognition as a Gold Glove finalist. But there were also several lows: a career-worst .229/.258/.358 slash line, a career-high 101 strikeouts with just 21 walks in 504 plate appearances, grounding into 16 double plays and fumbling numerous potential run-saving putouts at the plate.

Could Ramos' security be in jeopardy?

MLB insider Jon Heyman reports that the Nationals have been investigating the trade market for catchers and are involved on a number of fronts. Ramos is entering the final year of his contract and is arbitration-eligible. MLBTradeRumors.com projected his 2016 salary at $5.3 million.

Of course, the Nationals also have switch-hitting Jose Lobaton as Ramos' backup. Prospects Pedro Severino, 22, and Spencer Kieboom, 24, are the other two catchers on the 40-man roster, but neither is expected to be ready for the majors this season.

* The Nationals will formerly announce Murphy at a press conference on Thursday at noon, which will air live on MASN and MASNsports.com. Murphy reportedly agreed to a three-year, $37.5 million deal on Christmas Eve that was pending a physical to be completed after the holidays.

* San Diego has long been rumored as a possible landing spot for Desmond. FOXSports.com reports the Padres are having "ongoing discussions" with the longtime Nationals shortstop, although no deal is close.

* To follow-up to yesterday's question on whether the fans will forgive Jonathan Papelbon if he remains the Nationals closer in 2016, let's just say the overwhelming answer was no. However, there are some very creative and highly entertaining responses, not only on this site, but on our MASN Nationals Facebook page if you're looking for a mid-week chuckle.
