NEW YORK - We know the Nationals' offensive production has been awfully hit-or-miss - no pun intended, though actually, yes pun intended - this season, and we got a good glimpse of that Friday night when a group that has been pretty effective over the last month was completely shut down by underwhelming left-hander Jason Vargas.
What reason is there to believe today will be different? Well, for starters the Nats are facing a different starter, one they've enjoyed much success against over the years. Zack Wheeler may be pitching well right now, with a 2.82 ERA over his last 11 starts, but he's 3-8 with a 4.79 ERA in his career against the Nationals. One of those wins came last month, though it came in spite of the fact he allowed four runs on eight hits in 7 2/3 innings.
Tanner Roark, on the other hand, looks to continue his resurgence; he's 5-0 with a 1.63 ERA his last six starts. And the right-hander will be fresh, because he only threw 41 pitches in his last start before a 1-hour, 42-minute rain delay brought it to a halt.
