PHILADELPHIA - Well, we've reached the final day and game of this wacky series. And for now, the Nationals and Phillies are on schedule and set to wrap things up tonight as planned (though there is a slight chance of rain this evening). The forecast also looks decent for Thursday's makeup game against the Cubs in D.C., and for probably Friday and Saturday's games in Atlanta. Sunday ... that could be a different story, especially if Hurricane Florence indeed turns south as is now being forecast. But we've got plenty of time before we have to start worrying about that.
As for tonight's game at Citizens Bank Park, the Nationals are seeking their first three-game series sweep since they did it to the Orioles back in late May. They're also seeking their first five-game winning streak since that same stretch around Memorial Day, when they swept the Marlins before heading to Baltimore.
In order to do this, though, the Nats are going to have to put forth a better offensive attack against Aaron Nola than they did in two recent head-to-head encounters with the Phillies ace. Nola shut them out over eight innings on Aug. 23, then held them to one earned run in seven innings on Aug. 28. This start comes against Stephen Strasburg, who has a 3.06 ERA over his last three games (one of those against Philadelphia).
The Nationals do have another fresh arm available to them with Jeremy Hellickson activated off the disabled list. Hellickson, who sprained his right wrist Aug. 15, is going to have a tough time cracking the Nats' starting rotation right now, but he has expressed a willingness to pitch out of the bullpen, so he could prove valuable there over the final 2 1/2 weeks.
