FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Nationals are still looking for their first base runner against Matt Harvey, who's perfect through five innings. The hard-throwing right-hander has struck out six of the 15 batters he has faced.
Meanwhile, Gio Gonzalez is fighting control issues. The left-hander recorded the first two outs in the fourth before issuing back-to-back walks to Juan Uribe and Travis d'Arnaud. Wilmer Flores then battled Gonzalez, smacking a line drive past Ian Desmond on the seventh pitch of the at-bat. Uribe scored easily to give the Mets the lead.
After walking Juan Lagares to lead the bases, Gonzalez blew a fastball past Eric Campbell to get out of the jam and finally end the inning.
Update: Gonzalez ran into two-out trouble again in the fifth. A single by Ruben Tejada followed by Daniel Murphy's double gave the Mets runners at second and third and ended Gonzalez's evening.
Tanner Roark came in from the bullpen to get Uribe to ground out to Anthony Rendon and end the frame.
Gonzalez allowed one run on four hits with four walks and six strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings. He threw 105 pitches.
Jose Lobaton's one-out base-knock to right ended Harvey's perfection in the sixth. Roark unfortunately wasn't able to get a bunt down and struck out for the second out which was key becasue Rendon blooped another single to right. Yunel Escobar stepped to the plate with runners at the corners and two outs but he grounded out to Uribe to end the inning.
Update II: The Nats came through with a big two-out rally in the eighth and it started when Harvey bounced a slider off pinch-hitter Clint Robinson's left foot. The Mets challenged the ruling but the call stood and Nationals manager Matt Williams sent Danny Espinosa in to pinch-run for Robinson at first.
Rendon followed with an infield single, setting up another spot in the clutch for Escobar. This time he delivered, smacking Harvey's 98 mph heater up the middle. Espinosa raced around to tie the game on the base hit.
Mets manager Terry Collins ended Harvey's night and turned to newly-acquired right-hander Tyler Clippard to face Jayson Werth. The two former teammates locked up in an epic battle with Werth fouling off seven pitches. On the 13th pitch of the at-bat, Clippard got the call, fanning Werth on a low strike to end the frame.
Update III: Clippard dealt consecutive walks to Ryan Zimmerman and Ian Desmond with one out in the ninth, forcing Collins to go to Mets closer Jeurys Familia. Familia whiffed Michael A. Taylor on three pitches and Lobaton flew out to left to end the inning.
Aaron Barrett was impressive. The right-hander shutdown the Mets in the eighth and ninth to send the game to extra innings.
Update IV: Left-hander Felipe Rivero needed just nine pitches to retire the side in the 10th.
Nats sending Werth, Bryce Harper and Zimmerman to the plate in the 11th.
Update V: Harper was ejected in the 11th after home plate umpire Jerry Meals rung him up. Harper immediately jumped in Meals' face, arguing the call before the quick hook. Williams came out to argue briefly.
Harper's third ejection of the year forced Williams to make several defensive moves. Werth took over in right while Zimmerman moved to left and Dan Uggla entered the game at first base. It's Uggla's first game action of his 10-year career at first.
Update VI: Wilmer Flores blasted a walk-off homer off Rivero in the 12th to beat the Nats 2-1.
