Nationals recall right-hander Erik Davis, left-hander Ian Krol and catcher Sandy Leon as rosters expand

The Washington Nationals today recalled right-handed pitcher Erik Davis and left-handed pitcher Ian Krol from Syracuse of the Triple-A International League, as well as catcher Sandy Leon from Harrisburg of the Double-A Eastern League. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement. Davis joins the Nationals for second stint this season. He posted a 6.23 ERA in five June appearances with the Nationals. Davis finished 3-7 with a team-leading 15 holds, 9.3 strikeouts per 9.0 innings and a 3.10 ERA in 45 appearances this season for Syracuse. The 26 year-old Davis was acquired by the Nationals on March 28, 2011 in exchange for infielder Alberto Gonzalez. Krol also returns for a second stint with Washington. In 27 big league appearances with the Nationals, Krol posted a one win (July 25 vs. Pittsburgh), one hold (June 12 at Colorado) and a 3.24 ERA. Krol, 22, struck out 10.9 batters per 9.0 innings pitched en route to a 1.21 ERA in 26 minor-league games this season with Syracuse and Harrisburg. On March 20, Krol was acquired by Washington as the player to be named to complete the January 16, 2013 three-team, five-player deal that resulted in right-handed pitchers A.J. Cole and Blake Treinen joining the Nationals, outfielder Michael Morse being acquired by the Mariners and catcher John Jaso joining the Athletics. Leon, 24, played in 12 games and hit .267 (8-for-30) with two doubles, two RBI, two runs scored and four walks for the Nationals last season in his big league debut. Behind the plate while with Washington, Leon gunned down one of seven would-be basestealers. A highly-regarded defender. Leon threw out 27 of 70 (39%) would-be minor-league basestealers this season. He batted .177 in 95 games for the Senators in 2013.
